The smartphone business is a competitive one and OPPO’s A series is referred to be one of the value buys most of the time. But judging from the past offerings, what the brand has offered are low-price devices paired with a set of equally mid-low parts. They are still the value buy, mind you. However, it seems that there’s nothing for those who want a little bit more power.
But that image is going to change soon with the introduction of the new OPPO A98 5G. Its job is to introduce an “A-volution” by tuning up the ratio of “what you get is what you pay” but retaining that signature identity of great value for money the A series is known for.
Let’s find out what it has to offer.
Big batteries for big usages feat. SuperVOOC 67W Fast Charge
Truth be told, the majority of smartphone brands are packing a 5,000mAh battery into their devices that emphasize raw value for money and the OPPO A98 is no different here.
But the signature SuperVOOC fast charge tech comes in at a fast 67W to fill up the Li-Ion pack from about 15% to full in just under 50 minutes! Coupled with the Battery Health Engine featured, the longevity can be extended longer when compared to a conventional smartphone’s battery.
Large memory for the busy-goers
Although the modernized digital infrastructure means that most offline content has turned into an online format with the help of streaming and unlimited data access, it still helps to have a decent amount of RAM and storage in your phone to reduce any lag or capacity issues.
The OPPO A98 5G strikes for a good midpoint with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The former also has up to 8GB of expanded memory to give a temporary boost when there are too many apps to handle. The latter, on the other hand, supports a microSD card of up to 1TB for all your 4K recordings and FLAC music!
Choppy animations are a thing of the past
The maturity of the screen technology has essentially pushed the normalization of 90Hz in almost all budget devices with 120Hz being the go-to these days for buttery smooth animations and crisp visuals.
The OPPO A98 has just that at a nice 6.7 inches IPS LCD panel but that doesn’t mean that it is bad. In fact, it has 6 levels of adaptive refresh rate technology to keep power consumption low when viewing static content and the color gamut reaches 100% DCI-P3 too.
Powerful cameras at a decent price
Surprisingly, OPPO decided to give the OPPO A98 5G a strong camera setup that hosts a 64MP main camera, 2MP depth sensor, and 2MP microlens with 40x zoom.
Not only the main lens performs well by hardware definition but the final result is further enhanced by OPPO’s super-resolution algorithm through sub-pixel displacement. The VD multi-frame solution can further take it up to a synthesized 108MP photo with utmost clarity.
Here are some shots taken with the device.
Some things never change, at least for several years
Believe it or not, from this year onwards, OPPO has been focusing on making their devices last longer by running 48 months of fluency tests in their labs.
In short, the OPPO A98 is rated to run at its best for 4 years through the continuous receiving of various software optimization.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the OPPO A98 is an interesting phone considering it is trying to revamp the series image of “cheap” and “low-tier” devices by delivering a strong memory capacity support, a high refresh rate screen, a camera setup with flexible capabilities, and all-day battery life – all backed by a rigorous test to make sure it is good for years to come.
The device is priced at RM1,399 and comes in 2 different colors Dreamy Blue and Cool Black. Preorders will commence from May 15 to May 18 which is 4 days only.
Customers who pre-order OPPO A98 5G will be entitled to receive gifts worth up to RM377 which include an OPPO Band, True Wireless Earbuds, and 1+1-year warranty.
