This is the new OPPO Reno14 Pro 5G – with a new and bold design, yet quite thin too. It comes packed with the latest MediaTek chipset and also an impressively bright torch alongside an extra sensor for the cameras, is the Reno14 Pro worth the hype and the price?
Design
Let’s first take a look at the design. If you remember, the Reno13 Pro has a reflective pattern behind that looks like a butterfly wing. This time, the Reno14 Pro comes with the same idea of reflective patterns but with a completely different texture. OPPO said – and I’m not joking here – that this design is inspired by mermaids, dubbed “mermaidcore”.
Whatever the inspiration behind it is, I do believe that this iridescent mermaid design is very nice. At different angles, the reflected light gives off a different color too.
This phone is also thinner than its predecessor at only 7.42mm. The number doesn’t do it justice – but I can definitely feel its thinness when I hold it in my hands. The phone is also rather big.
Screen
That is because of the screen. Ever since the Reno13 Pro, the Reno Pro phones are using a 6.83-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2800×1272 pixels and goes up to 120Hz refresh rate.
Now, the screen in itself is capable of going up to around 1180 nits in auto brightness – good enough for outdoor usage.
However, the color accuracy of this screen is not the best. From our tests, using the out of the box default settings, the screen can only reach around 97.52% of sRGB and 71.54% of DCI-P3 color gamuts. That means the display is quite desaturated compared to other screens.
Now, we can head into the settings menu and enable the “bright” color profile, which boosts the color gamut coverage to 100% of sRGB and 98% of DCI-P3. That is a whole lot better, and the ΔE number is very low too. It seems like OPPO is just using a very desaturated look for its default settings.
Also, the fingerprint scanner is too low.
Performance
Now, let’s talk about the performance. The OPPO Reno14 Pro 5G is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 8450 chipset. During our briefing for this phone, we were told that OPPO and MediaTek are in close collaboration.
When we did our gaming test, yes – the performance is indeed quite okay. I can kinda roughly place the performance of the Dimensity 8450 somewhere around the Snapdragon 7 series of chipsets as it can run most games in the medium settings with comfortable frame rates.
Genshin Impact is above 30fps at medium settings and the overall experience was great.
Zenless Zone Zero is a notorious one since it renders everything in the map. With medium graphical settings at the new Failume Heights area, the performance tanks – and that is to be expected because every single device I own has the same issue at this area. When we fought the usual flower boss, it can become a slideshow at constantly – so lowering the graphical settings is highly recommended.
Wuthering Waves ran okay as it was hovering around 30fps with the medium graphical settings.
I do want to point out that the thermal limit on the Reno14 Pro is a bit low at only 42°C. It doesn’t actually matter since it the phone is indeed using a passive cooler and will thermal throttle eventually anyway.
Other games like COD Mobile Battle Royale mode and PUBG Mobile has zero issues, so there’s nothing to talk about those games.
Battery life
The battery life is something that I don’t know how to talk about it. You see, we get these phones like a week or two before the actual launch date. Usually, this isn’t an issue. However, this OPPO Reno14 Pro, with its 6,200mAh battery should last for a long time in the battery life test.
Turns out, from our standardized battery life test, this phone only lasts for 11 hours and 22 minutes. It shouldn’t be this low for a phone with a 6,200mAh battery. Oh – this is in 1080p resolution mode only.
When I redid the test on the native resolution, it only lasts 9 hours and 46 minutes. Yikes.
Of course, I contacted OPPO about this and I was told that “the unit we have is using an unfinalized firmware”. So I waited for a few days after the official launch of the phone – and there were no new firmware updates. I can’t do anything else – so here we are.
Charging speed
As for the charging speed, the OPPO Reno14 Pro comes with a proprietary 80W charger in the box. With the default out of the box settings, it can charge from 15% to completion in around 50 minutes. Quite good, and the temperature is kept in check too.
We can then head into the settings menu and turn on the fastest charging speed possible – and that doesn’t change the changing speed much but it does raise the temperature slightly.
When we used our own USB-PD charger, it also doesn’t differ much from the default charging speed. It’s slightly slower, but the temperature is the lowest among from all the three tests we did. It only takes in 27W at max via USB-PD, by the way.
The OPPO Reno14 Pro also has wireless charging, supporting up to the proprietary 50W wireless charging.
Software
As for the software, it’s actually quite good. ColorOS is consistent and very smooth with a lot of fancy animations throughout. There are ads and bloatware all over, but we can remove most of the bloatware.

Camera
As for the cameras, there are three here. We have triple 50MP sensors, all of them with autofocusing lenses. Now, I didn’t have much pics taken here and it’s a mix between some shots we took during the Reno14 Pro briefing.

A few more things to mention
And a few more things to mention. The OPPO Reno14 Pro 5G comes with a USB 2.0 port at the bottom with no display output capability, and it also has a dual SIM card slot.
It does have an IR blaster at the top that we can use to control other things around the house.
Should you buy the OPPO Reno14 Pro 5G?
Since we have delayed the review of this phone by a few days, we have the final price of the Reno14 Pro and also sat on it for a few things and think about it. This phone is priced at RM2,999. I have no other comments other than just yikes.
The price is too high, honestly. So let me know, what do you think about this phone? The OPPO Reno14 Pro 5G has great cameras, great design, decent performance, but the battery life is definitely weird, and suspect that it is caused by the firmware.
