MediaTek has prepped something for next year already, as the latest announcement covers the new Kompanio 540 SoC created for the poster boy of educational devices – Chromebooks.
The chip comes with an 8-core CPU including 2x Arm Cortex-A78 cores and a dual-core GPU, as well as support for LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage for a small yet capable design that covers the needs of web browsing, streaming, and gaming. It also powers more demanding applications like STEM learning tools, Tinkercad, and Minecraft Education Edition without lag.
According to them, the battery life has been improved by as much as 35% compared to the rest of the competition, making it highly appealing to those who want to create a fanless and quiet Chromebook. Its efficiency is said to be tangible even in high-resolution streaming on external displays, which can be useful for tutor-use units.
Chromebooks running the SoC are expected to roll out on January 26, so yeah, only a couple of months until the market welcomes another batch of ultra-efficient and portable devices.
