We entered the new generation of devices about a month ago with the release of the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipsets, and POCO surprised us with the new POCO F8 Ultra. It’s not just a new smartphone with the latest chipset equipped, but it also comes with Sound by Bose.
After enjoying my time with the POCO F8 Ultra until I forgot that I’m actually supposed to review it, I can share with you my top 3 reasons why the POCO F8 Ultra is the ultimate phone that you should get right now.
1. That Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset
Obviously, the chipset is a big part of the reason why the POCO F8 Ultra is in hot demand. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 promises massive performance uplift and improved efficiency over the previous generation, and we can definitely see that happening in demanding games through our gaming test as well.
Genshin Impact, at the highest graphical settings, managed to run close to 60fps through the entire gaming session, and the experience is really good.
Zenless Zone Zero is our second-most demanding game to date and it also managed to run nearly 60fps throughout the entire flower boss fight, which is the most graphically-intensive fight that is repeatable. I am very impressed by what it can do – and I am having such a good time with this smartphone – especially with the Sound by Bose.
Wuthering Waves is currently our most demanding game of all, and we can turn up the render resolution really high and also crank it up to the highest graphical settings too. Surprisingly, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 can still handle it, hovering at nearly 60fps throughout the entire nest fight. That nest fight with the jellyfish lady doing her special attacks and whatnot, can consume upwards of 18W – and the POCO F8 Ultra handled the heat really well too.
Speaking of heat, it took a really long time to make it thermal throttle too, despite Wuthering Waves consuming so much wattage in certain scenarios – thanks to the Wild Boost optimization that it has. We can enable Wild boost mode by heading into the Game Turbo menu.
Also, thanks to the VisionBoost chipset, we have the option to turn on Super Resolution to get a higher render resolution, and also to turn on Smart Frame Rate to achieve 120fps gameplay even on unsupported games like Genshin Impact.
2. Sound by Bose
I like to play my games using the loudspeaker at home. Why wear earbuds when I’m in the comfort of my own home, right? Well, the POCO F8 Ultra’s Sound by Bose literally made me forget that I am actually reviewing the phone and just enter pure bliss mode and enjoy the gaming experience that it offers.
The Sound by Bose is not just by name, but also in terms of the hardware and tuning as well. The POCO F8 Ultra is designed with symmetrical speakers – one bottom-firing and another top-firing speaker, and also a physical subwoofer beside the cameras at the back. It is essentially a 2.1 speaker system built into a smartphone!
Of course, it’s not really effective for me to describe how the speaker sounds to you, so we have prepared this short video for you to hear how good the speaker sounds while we’re playing games.
We can also change the sound profile as well. What we’re shown here is with the Dynamic sound profile and we can change it to the Balanced for a flatter frequency response.
We can even change between a few different preset EQs or make our own EQ too! The possibilities are literally endless and it’s up to how you want the sound profile to be.
3. The complete premium package
Of course, having magnificent performance and great speakers is only part of the story. We need a great audio and visual experience – and that’s where the display comes into play.
The POCO F8 Ultra comes with a 6.9-inch POCO HyperRGB AMOLED display that can go up to 120Hz refresh rate, yet has a higher-than-usual resolution of 2608×1200 pixels. The games look great with super high definition and also great colors.
Coupled with the 6,500mAh battery, we can play games at these graphical settings for a long time without worrying about the battery life.
Even if it does run out of battery because you lost track of time while gaming, it can quickly be charged back up to 100% in less than an hour. We already did the charging test, so have a look at the graph here.
