Samsung’s SmartThings platform recently received a pretty meaningful upgrade, and it’s tied directly to IKEA’s latest push into smart home gear to help make smart homes way more accessible without all the usual friction or cost barriers.

Samsung SmartThings can now work with Ikea Matter devices for more smart home fun 1

With IKEA’s new lineup of Matter-over-Thread devices, including smart bulbs, plugs, sensors, and even things like motion detectors and air quality monitors, coming out, the SmartThings hub can be the central hub for all to let these IKEA products work seamlessly with Samsung’s smart TVs, ACs, washing machines, and other 3rd party products.

For example, you can stick an IKEA door sensor on a frequently used door and track activity through SmartThings Family Care, which gives you a subtle way to check in on family members without being intrusive. On the home environment side, sensors can monitor temperature, humidity, and even air quality, and SmartThings will turn that into actionable suggestions – like nudging you to keep your room between 19-21°C for better sleep, or automatically triggering dehumidification when needed. If something goes wrong, like a water leak, you’ll get alerts immediately.

Meanwhile, IKEA’s new scroll wheel remote can be used to adjust light brightness and color temperature, as well as blinds – essentially things that can be controlled with variables. Under the hood, Samsung is also pushing early adoption of newer standards like Thread 1.4, which is basically the networking layer that helps these devices communicate efficiently without draining power.
