U Mobile just welcomed the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as the first academic partner on its Enterprise Innovation Platform to build a new bridge between university research and actual industry needs.
The two organisations will work together on advancing research and talent development around 5G connectivity and emerging tech, combining IIUM’s academic expertise with U Mobile’s ULTRA5G network and EIP’s broader industry ecosystem to explore what’s possible with 5G-Advanced, AI, and eventually 6G.
This ties into IIUM’s new 5G Research Lab at the Kulliyyah of Engineering, which U Mobile will power directly using its ULTRA5G network. That gives researchers and students a genuinely controlled environment to run 5G research, testing, and teaching, backed by a network that’s been independently recognized by Ookla and Opensignal as Malaysia’s fastest with strong marks for quality and availability.
Beyond the lab itself, IIUM researchers will also get access to EIP Hub’s sandbox and testing facilities, letting selected research projects get developed, tested, and demonstrated faster, building real capabilities toward future technologies like 6G along the way. The partnership is also expected to support talent development through co-innovation programmes, giving students and researchers hands-on industry exposure, along with a pathway to actually commercialize promising research rather than letting it stay purely academic.
Some early areas under consideration include smart campus solutions, IoT applications, and digital twins, with the strongest use cases potentially progressing well beyond the research stage.
U Mobile also expressed that it’s open to welcoming other universities, researchers, and technology partners into EIP going forward, aiming to build a broader, more connected innovation ecosystem across Malaysia.
