Here’s the latest announcement from Apple – the MacBook Pro. It got a big upgrade all over – and for the first time ever, this is a MacBook with a touchscreen, and it’s paired with an industry-leading PROLED XDR display that’s really thin. The new MacBook Pro also packs the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, up to 24 hours of battery life, and a design that’s 17% thinner and 13% lighter than the previous generation.

New game-changing display

The all-new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display features a tandem OLED screen that combines organic and inorganic materials for pixel-perfect blacks, 3000 nits peak brightness, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This is the world’s best laptop display — perfect for color-critical work, immersive media, or just staring at stunning visuals all day.

For outdoor use, the display hits 3000 nits of peak brightness, making it readable even under direct sunlight. The 16:10 aspect ratio gives you more vertical space for code, spreadsheets, or documents without sacrificing screen real estate. Plus, it also has the Dynamic Island just like iPhones.

And yes, this is the first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen. Apple claims that this brings forth their best multitasking capabilities directly to your fingertips. Swipe between apps, pinch to zoom, and use gestures you already know from iPadOS.

Personally, I do think that this MacBook Pro is the best option for those who are used to touch controls but need the capabilities of a laptop or macOS – like the macOS version of DaVinci Resolve, for example.

M5 Pro and M5 Max specifics

Of course, the SoCs are important. Since AI is a big selling point, Neural Accelerators in every GPU core for AI workloads – and this generation of MacBook Pro features:

  • M5 Pro (up to 18-core GPU): 30% faster graphics performance than the previous M4 Pro, with 60% faster machine learning tasks.
  • M5 Max (up to 40-core GPU): 40% faster graphics performance than M4 Max, with 70% faster machine learning performance.

Apple also claims that this new MacBook Pro can have up to 24 hours of battery life through mixed usage of web browsing, video streaming, and productivity work.

For this new generation of MacBook Pro, it is available in two sizes as usual – 14-inch that is 1.58mm thinner and 670g lighter, and 16-inch in size while being 1.66mm thinner and 760g lighter than its respective predecessors. That’s a big difference!

These new MacBook Pros are available in both Space Black and Silver finishes too.

I kinda want one

If you’ve been waiting for a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, this is it. The PROLED XDR display alone makes this a compelling upgrade over the LCD model, and the M5 Pro SoC ensures it’ll handle everything from video editing to AI workloads with ease. Maybe get the Max instead for way better AI workload automation and even more things while video editing?

I’m not really sure how touch works on macOS as of now, but we’ll see. I’m not even sure if other Macs that updated to Golden Gate will support touch on portable monitors.

For all I know, at the price that Apple is asking – especially for the M5 Max variants, it’s actually… kinda affordable even when maxed out with 128GB of unified memory.
