U Mobile announced that its ULTRA5G footprint now reaches roughly 2.3 million people across the state, extending next-generation connectivity to key economic, commercial, and tourism hubs. It’s a milestone built on expanded fibre infrastructure delivered with CTS Horizon, formerly known as Celcom Timur (Sabah).
That partnership started in April 2025, when U Mobile appointed CTS as its key fibre leasing partner for the 5G rollout across Sabah and WP Labuan. Sabah’s challenging terrain and infrastructure gaps make fibre a tough job, and CTS’s local expertise has been central to solving it. Since April 2025, CTS has delivered more than 500 leased fibre circuits across West Sabah, East Sabah, and WP Labuan, on schedule, meeting the rollout’s backhaul capacity and redundancy needs.
U Mobile first switched on ULTRA5G in Kota Kinabalu in August 2025 and has since expanded to Penampang, Tuaran, Papar, and Keningau. Today, more than 545 sites across Sabah run on upgraded fibre backhaul with capacity of up to 10Gbps per site, a tenfold jump from the 1Gbps typically used for 4G. The upgrade also adds network redundancy to minimize disruptions and keep service more reliable and consistent. Indoor coverage is available at key spots including Wisma Merdeka, Imago Mall, and Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
The wider payoff is for Sabah’s economy, as high-capacity connectivity reaches more communities and business hubs; U Mobile expects greater digital adoption across commerce, tourism, and enterprise, creating more opportunities for digital participation and supporting the state’s continued development.
