Modern cars are becoming rolling data centres of sorts. Between dashcams, parking surveillance and high-resolution media, there’s a lot more data being recorded and stored inside a vehicle than there used to be.

That’s where the Biwin Amber UV200 comes in. Instead of being a typical USB drive designed around short bursts of file transfers, it’s built specifically for the kind of continuous recording workloads you’d expect from an in-car storage device.

The UV200 uses a USB 3.2 Gen1 interface and can reach up to 200 MB/s read speeds and 80 MB/s write speeds. More importantly for dashcam users, it maintains at least 60 MB/s sustained write performance across its full capacity.

That matters when a dashcam is constantly writing footage, especially with multi-channel recording or parking surveillance running for hours at a time. Unlike occasional file transfers, these workloads keep hammering the storage with continuous writes and rewrites.

Meanwhile, its size and integrated MUDP structure plus low-profile lets drivers use it without taking up unnecessary space or getting in the way of other ports and parts of the cabin.

Biwin also designed it to accommodate various environments, such as operating temperatures from -25°C to 75°C, while its storage temperature range extends from -40°C to 85°C. It also comes with 1-metre drop protection, which should help when the drive is being transported or handled outside the car.

Thanks to the use of high-endurance 3D TLC NAND, it can withstand quite the number of repetitive overwrite cycles, which is exactly the type of workload running within dashcams and whatnot.

But of course, you can use it just like a standard thumb drive. It starts at 128GB and can be used for storing music libraries, including FLAC and WAV files, for vehicles that support those formats, as well as be connected to laptops and desktops for normal file transfer.

The Amber UV200 is offered in Midnight Violet and comes with a three-year limited warranty, giving it a bit more breathing room for drivers who intend to leave their storage plugged in and recording day after day.
