Finally, after being leaked and teased for months! The new Google Nexus 5 is officially announced, and the design is just like the leaked renders we have seen for the last uncountable amount of leaks.
Google made a very special and beautiful webpage for their flagship device this time, and Google boasts its features just like the Motorola X’s website did, and I’d say that they’re doing it very well.
So let’s talk about what’ new in the Android 4.4 KitKat first, as it is of course something that affects everyone one of us.
First off is of course the new Nexus 5’s 8MP camera with OIS (optical image stabilization), HDR+ and Android’s very own Photosphere capabilities. A quick recap on the features – the OIS will have pictures taken to have a lot less blur, HDR+ is basically burst shot for Android’s very, very slow HDR mode.
If you realized the “always listening” feature on the Motorola X, then this might be nostalgically familiar – Google brought that feature to the Nexus 5 so that it can listen to you too. All you gotta say is “OK Google” and it automatically launches the voice search for you! One thing I’m wondering though – why didn’t Google bring the seamless notification to the Nexus 5 too?
So that’s pretty much what interests me in the new Android 4.4 KitKat, and also the much needed revamp of the UI including the navigation bar and notification bar and also the icons of apps which is an eyesore. Now, let’s get on to the new Nexus 5
First thing’s first – I can’t deny how pretty LG and Google made it to look like. Finally the front-facing camera is facing straight, and not aiming to your face sideways. I’m wondering where the cluster of sensors have gone to though. And another thing if you realized, where is the speakerphone?
The all new Nexus 5 is available in two colours and two storage options – white, black, 16GB or 32GB. They all of course have the same specs, unlike what the rumours said.
- 4.95-inch 1080p (1920×1080) resolution full HD IPS display with 445 ppi
- Corning Gorilla Glass 3
- 8MP rear-facing camera with Optical Image Stabilization, 1.3MP front-facing camera
- Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.26GHz
- Adreno 330 GPU running at 450MHz
- Dual-band Wi-Fi running at 2.5GHz and 5GHz, supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
- Has SlimPort enabled
- Dual microphones
- Ceramic power and volume buttons (???)
- 2300mAh battery
- Sensors
- GPS
- Gyroscope
- Accelerometer
- Compass
- Proximity/Ambient Light
- Pressure
- Hall
After seeing the pretty impressive specs, I can’t help to wonder what is the Hall sensor is for. In engineering terms, the Hall sensor detects the presence of Hall effect – which changes the output voltage when a magnetic field is present. In layman’s terms though, it means that the Hall sensor detects magnetic field. Maybe Google has something in mind and what to do about it, but for now, I can think of nothing except for a little bit of encryption. Another thing that I can’t brain is the usage of ceramic buttons. Seriously, is it that often that buttons of other materials break?
Amazingly but predictable since it is Google, the price of the new Nexus 5 for both colours and both storage options remains the same – 16GB is $349 and the 32GB is $399, which is approximately RM1107.03 and RM1265.63 respectively. Surely the price of the phone when it’s in Malaysia will be at least RM1650 for the 16GB version if it’s following the Nexus 4’s price.
It is of course not available in Malaysia yet, but we expect it to be in Malaysia somewhere about in a month or so.
