Out of nowhere, Google decided it’s time to do a little party pooper announcement by announcing they are tightening security by disabling the ability to sideload apps that are not created by verified developers.
The policy, rolling out next year in select countries hit hardest by fraudulent app scams, aims to curb repeat offenders who exploit anonymity to spread malware, commit fraud, and impersonate legitimate brands, which happens more frequently in sectors of finance and, practically speaking, any organization that deals with sensitive info.
The system works like an ID check at an airport: Google will confirm the identity of the developer but won’t review the content of the app itself. Then, verified developers will be required to register through a new ‘Android Developer Console’ designed for those distributing apps outside of Google Play, while student and hobbyist developers will have access to a simplified account type. Developers already on Google Play have largely met these requirements through the existing Play Console.
By mandating developer verification, they hope to create an accountability layer that prevents bad actors from quickly re-emerging under new identities after takedowns.
While the move strengthens Android’s security posture, it ultimately goes against what it was supposed to be – the “fully open environment” counterpart of Apple in the mobile space, with its “tightly locked down” practice.
User backlash is to be expected as well if the policy is to be fully committed to production, as certain countries are known for their reliance on 3rd-party app stores, which can potentially choke them away from the diverse range of available apps.
As of now, four selected countries of Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, have been announced regarding this new blockade, which will go into effect starting next September, with the rest of the world following suit beyond 2026.
But hey, any last-minute halt could be possible, so let’s see if the world would voice out its frustration about this.
