Factory automation ain’t something new in the world of industrial manufacturing, especially those working in the automobile sector. But when you add precision engineering into the mix, it suddenly becomes more complex but the benefit of higher efficiency, less production, and other merits are pretty obvious when done correctly.
So yeah, fellow Apple is planning to do just that for the production of the iPhone moving into the future, if the sources can be confirmed.
Tracing the post by The Information followed up by TweakTown, the big US tech company has gathered a bunch of managers and told them to reduce the number of workers on the assembly line for iPhones, particularly for the final assembly line.
Expecting as high as a 50% headcount reduction over the next few years, this also tells the other side of the story or rather the reason behind this move – giving the “YES” to projects revolving around automation and some other supply chain improvement strategies.
Even though high up-front costs will always be the main “issue” for any organization to work on, perhaps the recent demonstration of AI technology like digital twins (Thanks, NVIDIA) made it easy for executives to realize that it is now possible to “spend money in a worthwhile way” to obtain cutting edge equipment and software.
But of course, this is the expansion phase of the full automation ambition since Apple’s Senior VP of Operations Sabih Khan with Peter Thompson who’s working as VP of Operations already has something similar working since last year, implementing it through partners like Pegatron, Luxshare Precision, and Foxconn. The tasks automated by the machines include metal brackets and flexible PCB installation, all without human intervention.
Despite not knowing whether Apple might officially address this “rumor” to the public, it would make sense given that it follows the overall downward trend of the total employee count of 1.6M in 2022 to 1.4M in 2024.
