Last weekend, we had the chance to unbox a brand new ASUS Zenfone 5. It’s definitely one of the more exciting devices of 2014 and we’ll quickly dig in as to what the whole phone means for the market.

Unfortunately we discovered during the unboxing that the device didn’t have enough power – as a result, we couldn’t boot it for the camera. Nevertheless, we’ll provide you what we can, with a full review coming in a week’s time.

The contents should not surprise you. You’re only getting 7 things in the box:

What’s in the box?

  • Wall Charger
  • MicroUSB cable
  • Manual
  • Warranty booklet
  • Earphone
  • Earphone buds
  • How does the phone fare?

When we picked up the phone, it was really light. It had the kind of lightness that fits into pockets and naturally fit in your hands. Plus, there’s a slight grip and curve to the back cover that formed some semblance of balance in your palms. In its own way, it’s quite assuring that this phone won’t be slippery in your hands.

While the phone’s price is tag is an absolutely reasonable RM599, it certainly feels like something much more luxurious. There’s even some parts of the phone made with (what we suspect) to be brushed aluminium. Although we don’t recommend a deliberate drop test, this is one phone that certainly inspires confidence in this area.

There was ONLY 1 concern that we have. The back camera lens was settled right in the middle of the curve on the back of the phone cover – and this is worrying as accidental scratches on the lens might occur. As a result, we have to recommend getting a case for the phone – at this point, we are unsure how scratch resistant that camera glass is.

The phone’s power and volume buttons are embedded on the side of the case, and does require a firmer press – which is something that will require some getting used to. This is a good thing, as it would mean no accidental button presses – especially if you keep have an active lifestyle and have your phone constantly on you.

We could only find fault with the location of the camera lens. Apart from this, we found the ASUS Zenfone 5 scored well on first impressions and built quality. We at NasiLemakTech are impressed with the way ASUS has been pushing these affordable devices, and we expect the Zenfone 5 to outperform other brands in the same price category.
