Sometimes, we have some Bluetooth speakers to review. Today, what we have is something less common – a wireless Bluetooth speaker that is also waterproof. It’s the Edifier MP100 Plus – and it promotes itself as the best companion for outdoor activities.
Let’s see what it has to offer.
First, the packaging comes in a half-sided transparent front to let you see the entire speaker at once, sitting nicely on top of the green plaque.
The overall design is going for the outdoor-focused aesthetic and the amount of water to emphasize that it is very waterproof is more than enough to convey the message.
The items you get are fairly simple: The speaker, manual, warranty card, charging cable, and a tie.
To be fair, the MP100 Plus is a large speaker but due to it being spherical, it fits into one’s hand quite well and it weighs quite a bit as well. But thanks to its design covering the upper part of the sphere shape, the sound basically just blasts as loud and as far as it could, thanks to the 43mm driver. The max volume of this thing can easily swarm the entire household as well.
Also it is not overdoing it in terms of the maximum amplitude vs what it can handle so there’s no audio tearing or buzzing even if you try to take off with this thing.
So you’ll have no problems taking it to some party gatherings or even for aerobic exercises. Auntie groups will find this thing easily to bring along and loud for them too.
The operating mechanism here is basically just press and hold until you hear some sound cues. The funny thing here is the sound library they used because the power on sound effect is a click that you can find in one of the TikTok videos while the power off is simply Window 10’s notification chime.
But at least the buttons are labeled clearly and function just as they are – plus for “volume up” and down for “volume down”. Nothing more, nothing less.
One of the ways how the MP100 Plus achieves great waterproofing insulation is by simply hiding the charging port behind a very thick silicone cover. Although the fitting of the USB-C port is shorter than the usual depth, at least it is still stable enough to not get disconnected by a measly fling.
For the lulz, we just straight up dumped the speaker into the water for 1 hour while playing some Youtube videos. If it is fully submerged then the sound is going to be muffled but the raw amplitude of this thing makes it still rather audible from about 1 to 2 meters away.
After really having fun with the liquid for about 60 minutes, we dried it naturally and yep, still works fine and sounds the same as its pre-wet condition!
Conclusion
Coming from the perspective of just wanting a durable and loud enough portable Bluetooth speaker, the Edifier MP100 Plus really delivers what it promised without too many drawbacks. Accessible controls, good battery life, IPX7 waterproof rating, and an essential 43mm driver to pump out audio – this thing basically does the simple things up to a good standard.
At just the price of RM199, it can really give the competitors of portable speakers like JBL and Sony a run for their money. When things get really close to each other, what we can recommend here is to pull the trigger if the design is what you seeking as individual brands have their own shapes and colors.
