Facebook Home is now official and will hit the Play Store on 12 April. In essence, it is a launcher with deep Facebook integration. Here are some of the features.

  • Cover Feed – replacing the lock screen and home screen, shows the latest updates on Facebook (much like what the Facebook widget is)

  • Chat Head – Facebook Mesenger, but now blown up to be your default messaging app

  • Notification – pretty much iOS-like where notifications will pop up on screen instead of appearing subtly on the top bar in Android

  • Apps – app drawer that is pretty straight forward, but again with deep integration with Facebook

Facebook Home will be available on selected devices at launch, and slowly rolls out to other Android devices. The lucky ones are HTC One X, HTC One X+, new HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Note II and upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4.

Now what actually worries me a little is that Facebook has explicitly stated that Facebook Home will be the new Facebook software for Android. Meaning, they want to use an app launcher to replace an app, which will play a pivotal role in your daily smartphone usage. Facebook has always been plagued with privacy issues every now and then, and personally speaking, I don’t really want their software to play such a big role on my smartphone.
