As confirmed by many sources, Facebook apparently is hiring ex-Apple engineers to develop their very own Facebook Phone (which I shall now dub it FON, being FacebookphONe).

But the question remains, is it necessary? No doubt, integrating the most popular social media platform into the very core function of a phone is very interesting and convenient indeed, especially to the GenY that live, eat & breath social media. Apple has done the same albeit limited integration with Twitter. Google will fasten G+ into the new versions of Androids. Perhaps, Zuckerberg is afraid of being left out or is in the spending mood, has decided that it’s time to hold Facebook in the ‘physical’ realm.

We know this attempt is not a new one with the HTC ChaCha being the first dedicated FON with a dedicated Facebook button. It flopped without much attention. Zuckerberg never made it compulsory for employees to own one.

One critical point to note was that the HTC ChaCha was based on the Android 2.3 platform. The rumored FON will not be based on a new OS (despite having BILLION of dollars in fund) but a modified Android OS version instead. In that case, the FON will only be a new skin on the same hardware, like what HTC Sense did with their spawns.

Thus the question of practicality remains. Facebook achieved its status today through integration of mobile technology through the internet. While they will not ignore the rest of us who did not join their FON foray, why not just come up with better cross-platform software? Unless, they are serious in bringing back the ‘F’ button which I can do with or without on my touchscreen just the same.

Then how about iOS? The mobile giant that the late Steve Jobs created has now eclipsed the total number of mobile users when you factor in Facebook users using their iPods and iPads. The effect of such discrimination remains to be seen.

I suspect, this idea is meant to generate revenues after investors lambasted them.
