On 18th December 2017, an event was held at SJK(C) Mun Yee. This event focuses on the Fight Crime For Schools campaign, which is a CSR initiative by Gamma Solution with collaboration with Intel and WD as the main sponsors. Here’s how it affects us all.

Firstly, as the name implies, this is indeed an initiative to help the students – particularly those who are still in primary school. Remember back in the days where CCTVs were installed in schools to monitor everyone’s movement? Well, take that idea and enhance it in a more effective manner. Gamma Solution chose to use high-definition IP cameras to be installed at school entrances, students’ pick-up & drop-off areas.

Fight Crime For Schools

Wan Yat Hon, the Managing Director of Gamma Solution, expressed his gratitude as the Fight Crime For Schools campaign was supposed by Deputy Education Minister YB Senator Datuk Chong Sin Woon and Polis Di-Raja Malaysia (PDRM).

As of today, there are already 100 schools nationwide (including East Malaysia) that has been made safer with Gamma Solution’s Fight Crime For Schools campaign, and a total of RM1,000,000 has been expended for this campaign thus far.

Also, 100,000 copies of the multi-lingual Crime Prevention Handbook has been printed and is ready to be distributed in Q1 2018 to the aforementioned 100 schools. The Crime Prevention Handbook has illustrated comics so that everyone can understand and there are also contents shared by PDRM.

There are 3 parts to this Fight Crime For Schools campaign – they are:

1. Tools to Fight Crime:

The installation includes 1x Intel Embedded NVR System c/w 4x outdoor Megapixels IP Cameras to cover left & right of the main road (student pick-up & drop-off area) and school main entrance & exit. All activities happened in front of schools, human faces and car number plates will be captured clearly.

2. Alert to Enforcement:

The system is able to link to Police CMS Center via Internet. Upon emergency panic alarm triggered by Guard or Head Master, (like kidnap, snatch or crime cases happen at schools) LIVE video from that particular school will pop-up at Police CMS. Action will be taken immediately.

3. Prevention & Deterrent:

Gamma Solution will provide a Crime Prevention Handbook with useful information to teachers, parents, and students about tactics to prevent crime and invite Police Officer as a speaker to share about crime prevention for all teachers, parents and students.

The eligibility requirements for schools to participate in this campaign include:

  • Primary schools in Malaysia (SK or SJKC)
  • No existing HD / Megapixels IP Camera installed at school
  • Crowded and busy traffics at entrance / drop-off areas
  • High risk, targeted as kidnaping hot spot previously
  • Equipped with internet access (UniFi or Broadband with Public IP) to setup connection with PDRM Control Room

Alright, let’s talk about the tech behind the Fight Crime For Schools campaign. I’ve seen the CCTVs myself, and I’ve played around with it live.

The cameras look like any sort of typical CCTV, but the quality it produces is top-notch HD quality. The demo was done indoors, and the lighting isn’t exactly ideal for cameras. There’s minimal delay too, by the way.

The systems that were used to monitor the CCTV system is a simple rig. From what I can see, they’re using Intel Celeron processors with a custom-made HTPC-style case that’s made out of brush aluminium. ASUS motherboards were used on for these systems, by the way.

[UPDATE]: We just got word that these demo PCs are using Celeron, but the PCs for schools that were sponsored by Intel are actually Intel Core i3 processors.

Now, WD has a few different types of hard disks – each of them are color-coded to differentiate what type of use case scenario that it’s optimized for. Here’s a great guide that summarizes the differences between each color of the hard disk’s series.

With that said, WD sponsored their WD Purple hard disks for Gamma Solution and the Fight Crime For Schools campaign – because WD Purple is optimized for 24/7 read/write, perfect for surveillance systems. WD also sponsored WD Gold hard disks as these videos captured will need to be archived somewhere that can be served readily.

As all of these hardwares are working together in harmony, the footages captured are so clear that you can actually see the face and the number plates of vehicles that passed by the CCTV’s viewing angle.

Thanks to much to Gamma Solution and the sponsors for the Fight Crime For Schools campaign. This is something that helps to make Malaysia a better place for everyone – even those who are not in school. This is for those you care about. This is for those you love.
