When Samsung released the Galaxy A33 5G last year, I called it the best hidden gem smartphone. For its price, it had a good balance in terms of everything. Great display, actually decent performance, fantastic software – and most importantly, great cameras. It was also the lowest-priced smartphone with a proper physical OIS built into its main camera’s lens. I recommended the Galaxy A33 to so many people, and they told me it’s a fantastic phone overall.
Fast forward to today, Samsung stealthily released the Galaxy A34 5G. I’ve actually had it for more than a day at this point and did quite a lot of tests – and I found out quite a lot of things regarding this phone.
Let’s just quickly run through the specs first:
- 6.6-inch Super AMOLED screen
- 2340×1080 pixels
- 120Hz refresh rate
- MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset
- Triple rear-facing cameras
- Main: 48MP f/1.8; 26mm; PDAF; OIS
- Ultrawide: 8MP f/2.2; 16mm; fixed focus
- Macro: 5MP f/2.4; fixed focus
- 13MP f/2.2 selfie camera
- 6GB RAM
- 128GB storage
- One UI 5.1 with Android 13
- 5,000mAh battery
- 25W charging via USB-PD PPS
The one thing I immediately realized upon holding the phone is the massive phone size. I remember that when I reviewed the Galaxy A33 5G last year, the phone was a lot smaller than what we have today. That’s because the screen size has increased from 6.4-inch to 6.6-inch. That 0.2-inch does make a huge difference, and Samsung didn’t shrink the bezel size too.
Speaking of that, the selfie camera cutout is still the same as before. It’s using a waterdrop design and I don’t have any issues with it, honestly. Smaller than the Dynamic Island – that’s for sure.
Samsung did give us an upgrade to the screen too – the refresh rate has been bumped from 90Hz to 120Hz. While that doesn’t sound like much, I assure you that the differences are very apparent when you start using the phone.
The colors available on the Galaxy A34 5G are also the same as the A54 – so we have 4 different colors to choose from.
- Awesome White
- Awesome Graphite
- Awesome Lime
- Awesome Violet
Of course, we’ll also have to talk about the new design. For whatever reason, Samsung decided to make the new generation of A-series smartphones feature the same design language as the flagship S23 series. Each of the cameras is individual protruding circles.
I mean, I’m not complaining – it’s sleek and minimalistic at the same time. Combined with the vibrant phone color, the new A series really stands out from the sea of smartphones in the market today.
The camera system is also something that I want to highlight a quick while. The 48MP sensor might not sound that compelling on paper, but I can assure you that this phone can take some beautiful pictures. I’ve also said that the Galaxy A33 was the cheapest phone to have a proper OIS system – and I’m glad to see that the Galaxy A34 has OIS too.
I’m sure many people are also worried about the performance – and I am too. Unfortunately, I’ve been busy testing out some other parts of the phone right now – so I’ll have to delay the gaming test for at least another day or two. Do subscribe as we’ll publish it as soon as we can.
Currently, that’s all I have to share about the Galaxy A34 5G. Unfortunately, we do not have the price yet – so that’ll also have to wait for a little longer.
Our review will come soon – so stay tuned for that.
