This is the first time ever that Samsung is bringing in proprietary accessories to their smartphones – heck, this is the first time ever for Android for all I know. Samsung included an authentication chip in all of its S-View cases, which didn’t do much until the Galaxy Note 3’s most recent software update – the Android 4.4 KitKat.

The update is said to have brought the authentication chip’s purpose to life, that is to only work if there’s an authentication chip authorized by Samsung itself. That means all third-party S-View cases are rendered absolutely useless, as it only covers and protects the screen, nothing more.

Surely that might seem disappointing, but there are already fixes for this problem, though it requires butchering up a genuine Galaxy Note 3 S-View case for the authentication chip and patching it up to the third-party casing. If you’re not keen on doing so, you will have to root your Galaxy Note 3 and Xposed Framework to work, which will then bring all of your third-party cases to life.

This is only the first ever situation where Samsung brings in a proprietary case to the scene, and it’ll not be the first, obviously. It is speculated that since the Galaxy Note 3 has such a misfortunate feature, such misfortune will be brought upon the descendants of the entire Galaxy Note and Galaxy S family in the future. Such a horrible day for tech and also third-party case designers. Seriously Samsung, don’t lock us down with your ugly cases.
