Google has announced they are adding AI-powered scam detection features directly into Android to help protect users and their personal information.

Google Android AI Scam Detection

The collaboration was done with financial institutions to gain insights into the scams customers face in terms of how scam content was designed and formatted to look authentic.

But with the power of AI models, Android devices can now flag suspicious patterns and issue real-time warnings throughout a conversation while maintaining user privacy (scammers will not see the warning for obvious reasons).

Better, the AI is an on-device model that doesn’t require an internet connection to function, is enabled by default, and is applied to conversations involving phone numbers that are not saved in the contact list.

User also has the flexibility in terms of applicable actions to these scammy messages or calls by either reporting + blocking the sender or dismissing the warning if it is false alarm. Google also reassured that all reports are received by Google and network carriers only to strengthen and improve the AI model.

At the time of writing, the feature has rolled out to users in the US, UK, and Canada but is slated for wider expansion later. This follows the previous release of a similar feature for phone calls aimed at reducing the risk of scam contact and associated damages.
