Google has recently unveiled the ‘Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026’ infographic, and the big takeaway is that the SEA region is now the fastest-growing region for Gemini adoption, driven by a young, digitally connected population and the AI model’s ability to understand local languages.

Google Gemini is really taking off in SEA; Malaysia sees 2X the user base in just months 1

The report, which covers Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, paints a picture of AI becoming an everyday companion rather than a niche productivity tool. People are increasingly relying on Gemini to help with work, creative projects, learning, and daily tasks.

With more than 900M MAUs right now, they say that one of the biggest drivers of this growth is support for local languages, as nearly 70% of prompts submitted across Southeast Asia are written in native languages, with Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia leading the way. This is supported by findings from AI Singapore’s SEA-HELM evaluation, where Gemini is now the top-performing LLM for SEA languages.

Speaking of languages, SEA is also a good region for multimodal AI due to the various types of requests and input sources containing a wide variety of files, with more 40% include voice, photos, or videos instead of plain text. Voice-only interactions account for over 10% of requests, with users taking advantage of features such as Gemini Live to translate signs, troubleshoot repairs, analyze documents, and complete tasks while on the move.

There are also other bunch of numbers that talk about how SEA users utilize Gemini:

  • ~40% request is about generating content (Images, videos, music, documents); 1 in 5 Malaysians do this
  • Productivity assistant in document summarizing, info organizing, recommendations, and step-by-step guidances
  • Inputs in Bahasa Malaysia more than doubled compared to last year
