Some of you – well, most of you, might have heard about Phonebloks, which features an idea on modular phone. Google is doing just that with the codename, Project Ara. Google now has given us an idea of how much a basic set will cost. It is going be sold starting at around $50 USD(approx. RM163.88 MYR) however, the most basic set would only have wifi capability. Google is targeting to produce a fully functional prototype of Project Ara in the coming weeks and plans to go on consumer sale around the first quarter of 2015.
Together with Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP), they are now focusing on to produce the most basic set that would go on sale for the price as mentioned above, $50 USD(approx. RM163.88 MYR) and will reportedly to only be wifi capable; no phone/3G/LTE function. This could mean that it is something like buying an iPod Touch except that you could upgrade it to become a phone later on. That’s the power of flexibility through modularity. Such flexible device would certainly catch a huge market.
The base of the device is also said to come in various sized from a very small device to tablet size base. Think about it, you could buy the base then add in anything else to your liking such as the GPS, screen, phone functionality and other functionality. Not only you could choose what capability your device would have but it is said that various brands or manufacturer are going to release their own modules.
As some of you might think that this device is going to be like Lego bricks and having it fall is going to be a total disaster but fret not, the main skeleton or base would have a locking mechanism that will be controlled by software so the modules and components would stay locked until you need to add or change them.
3D printing was also on everybody’s mind when it comes to the phone’s external. It could mean that your phone is now fully customisable and will be designed uniquely by you.
Certainly something special going on here, imagine that you can have a plug-and-play upgrade for your phone’s screen when you’re switching from a 1080p screen to a 4K screen. Or maybe when you’re dead tired of charging your battery every 6 hours – just change the battery to a higher capacity one or even one with better technology!
