The word WebM goes a long way back until Google I/O 2010, that’s three years ago. After long being in production, Google is finally going to complete its next generation video compression technology named VP9.

If you don’t know what WebM is, it’s a project by Google to have an open standard for video compression technology to be used across the globe with no legal constraints and everyone can contribute, develop or simply explore around project over at their website.

With the WebM technology now being enjoyed by everyone surfing on YouTube, we’re all already enjoying its compression power that makes the video so smooth on our slow Malaysian Internet. This VP9 codec which Google is looking to finish it up on the 17th of June, will even be better – in what terms we do not know yet, guess we’ll have to wait till the great unveiling.
