Move aside, Graphene. Stanene is the new super material on the block.

Graphene was the name everybody was talking about when it comes to super conductor and super strength material of the future. Now, scientists have discovered the potential of Stanene as which supersedes the Graphene even before it was fully developed.

Stanene theoretically have 100% efficiency  for an electrical conductor at temperatures up to 100 degrees celcius. This is just the right material to replace our old and primitive copper wires. Graphene structure is a single atom layer of carbon while stanene is a single atom layer of tin. Just imagine the potential of this superconductor.

During my Electrical Materials class, my lecturer also explained that copper have a problem of keeping it’s shape which is called the ‘copper migration’ phenomenon. Basically, a single strand of copper will eventually develop a lump on one side and becomes thin on the other side because of electron flow. With stanene, this problem could be theoretically eliminated.

As cool it may sound, Stanford and SLAC researchers says that this material only exists theoretically. Stanene is still yet to be fabricated by anyone. The material was claimed that it should have the electrical efficiency of 100% at room temperature.

We can never know when stanene will be fabricated let along, enter the consumer market.
