Here we have the latest smartphone from Honor – the Honor 7X. Unlike the flagship Honor 7 that was released a few years ago that we’ve reviewed here. Skip two years ahead – and here is the brand new Honor 7X. Here’s what has changed compared to two years ago. Also, we got a teaser for the upcoming Honor flagship too – the Honor View 10.
Let’s take a look at both the smartphones that were present at the event venue today.
Honor 7X
Instead of being a flagship smartphone, the new Honor 7X is now a mid-range smartphone with the Kirin 659 series chipset. Following the trend of re-branding previous Honor flagships as mid-range smartphones with the suffix of X at the end, the Honor 7X does come with quite a lot of advanced features compared to the original Honor 7, too.
But first, here’s the quick list of specs for the Honor 7X.
- Kirin 659 chipset with octa-core processor
- 4×2.36GHz Cortex-A53 processor + 4×1.7GHz Cortex-A53 processor
- Mali-T380 MP3 graphics
- 4GB RAM
- 64GB storage
- Rear-camera: hybrid dual-camera system
- 16MP camera with 1/2.9-inch sensor with 1.25µm pixel size; comes with PDAF
- 2MP secondary camera for depth sensor
- Selfie camera: 8MP fixed focus
- 5.93-inch 1080p display with 18:9 aspect ratio; IPS LCD
When it comes to the Honor 7X, their main selling point is this – the 18:9 aspect ratio screen (empirically it’s 2:1) with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels. Seems familiar? That’s because the Honor 7X is aimed to go head-to-head against the OPPO F5 that we recently reviewed here, and also the Vivo V7/V7+.
For some reason, the Honor 7X has a humongous camera bump. It’ll be a sad day if the phone does not come with a case that at least compensates for the thickness of the camera bump. Or better yet, have a lip to protect the lens from getting scratched when laid flat.
In terms of design, the Honor 7X seems like they just reused the body from the Honor 8 Pro. Other than that, nothing much has changed, in my opinion.
Honor View 10
The Honor View 10 however, is quite a different story. It still looks like it has the same body as the Honor 7X and Honor 8 Pro, but its features are heavily focused on AI. As we all know, Huawei and Honor is really focused on AI this year – especially with their new Kirin 970 chipset.
All we got from the launch event is an introduction to what the all-new Honor View 10 can do – which is actually very similar to what the existing Mate 10 can already do. In many ways, it seems like the Honor View 10 is a trimmed down version of the Mate 10 – much like the relationship between the Huawei P9 and Honor 8 that we reviewed here.
As for the specs, we know the upcoming Honor View 10 has a 3,750mAh battery together with a 20MP + 16MP camera at the rear. Other than that, we don’t know anything else other than the launch date.
January 15th 2018 is the day. Stay tuned for more – perhaps there will be another launch event?
