Huawei has already teased us with the arrival of the Huawei Pay feature to Malaysia since we did our hands-on experience with the newly-announced Huawei Mate 40 Pro. It was a surprise to me to learn that Huawei Pay is actually a feature that was introduced back in August 2016 in China as a part of Huawei Wallet, which is also a part of the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).

For us Malaysians, the Huawei Pay feature is supported by both UnionPay International and ICBC (Malaysia) Berhad only. To use this feature, you can just add your UnionPay or ICBC card into Huawei Pay, and start paying using your phone via PayWave through the phone’s NFC. I mean, if you’re already using a PayWave credit or debit card, then this is the same thing – but you don’t have to dig out your wallet for that particular card.

Also, Huawei is having some rewards for you if you’re making your payments via Huawei Pay. From 12th December 2020 until 12th March 2021, all ICBC UnionPay Credit Cardholders who register their cards with Huawei Pay can enjoy up to 50% cashback for every transaction with minimum spending of RM20.

The top monthly spender will also stand a chance to receive a Huawei P40, Huawei FreeBuds 3, Huawei Watch GT 2E, or other prizes.

They’re giving out the P40, not the P40 Pro or even the newly-announced Mate 40.

By looking at the bigger picture, I think the Huawei Pay feature is quite late to the party. There are already many other payment methods available right now, and PayWave is already a common feature on bank-issued cards. Yet Huawei Pay doesn’t support that many cards at launch.

When Samsung Pay launched in February 2017, it supported many different banks right off the bat. Samsung had Maybank, CIMB, Citibank, and Standard Chartered, and Hong Leong Bank a little later. But Samsung Pay is not only for payment – because you can also use it for loyalty cards like B Infinite, Bonuslink, and Sunway Pals. Let’s not forget that when Samsung Pay launched in Malaysia, we didn’t have that many different types of e-wallets.

Credit where credit is due though, Huawei is bringing the new Huawei Pay feature to many different devices – including the mid-range Nova series.
