The PICO brand, known for its VR/XR/MR headsets, has officially unveiled the OS 6 update that brings a lot of revamps and optimizations that make it essentially a new experience.

Under the hood, the overhaul is brought forward through the PICO Spatial Engine that shifts from the older “each app handles its own rendering pipeline” approach to a deeper level that is now done by the OS.

That means 2D apps, 3D experiences, full virtual environments, and even your physical surroundings can all be rendered simultaneously in one unified system, essentially helping both users and devs to work around faster and easier.

This is also part of PICO’s “spatial multitasking” strategy that streamlines different categories of movements and actions together, such as moving from pure “air hockey” gestures of look and pinch to activating XR controllers or keyboard + mouse combo.

For the 2,600+ enterprise institutions PICO already works with, this essentially turns XR into a stable, responsive digital workspace rather than just a demo environment.

Speaking of that, developers will be able to access the new PICO Spatial SDK uilt in Kotlin, introduces component-based APIs and unified runtime adaptation, while the PICO Spatial Plugin for Android Studio and a desktop-based PICO Emulator let developers design and test without even needing a headset.

There is also WebSpatial, which is an open-source framework that brings standard web tools like HTML, CSS, and React into spatial computing, enabling install-free cross-platform apps that can run across PICO OS, VisionOS, and AndroidXR. Lastly, Unity and Unreal Engine support has been updated to allow MR games to run alongside 2D and 3D apps

For this year, PICO will also be releasing a brand new XR headset targeting a global launch in late 2026.

Early info depicts it to utilize next-gen MicroOLED displays with nearly 4000 PPI, which is nearly 9x the density of flagship smartphones, resulting in an average 40 PPD, with a center sweet spot exceeding 45 PPD, which should make text sharp enough for real professional workflows.

Now only known as Project Swan, it will be powered by a dual-chip architecture built around custom XR silicon, with one dedicated to perception handling and imaging, while the other is in charge of all the data processing, said to be 2x stronger in CPU and GPU power compared to the current XR2 Gen 2 platform.

Lastly, PICO has opened the Global Early Access Program that looks for experienced users with high-end device backgrounds to participate in closed beta testing for both Project Swan and PICO OS 6, aiming to gather rigorous technical feedback and ensure tight synergy between hardware and software.
