Intel confirms USB bug on Lynx Point chipsets 3

Intel has confirmed in a Product Change Notification that the Lynx Point chipset designed for the upcoming Haswell family of CPU is plagued by a bug that will cause USB 3.0 devices to disappear after waking up from S3 standby mode. The issue has been rectified in stepping C2, which will start sampling in mid April, and hit the market in July.

The following chipsets are affected:

  • Desktop – Q87, Q85, H87, Z87, B85
  • Workstation – C222, C224, C226
  • Mobile – QM87, HM87, HM86

Intel is expected to introduce the new CPU before the new chipset is available in the market, thus most of the customers should not be affected by the bug.

In 2011 the Cougar Point 6-series chipset designed for Sandy Bridge was affected by a bug causing the SATA ports to degrade and ultimately fail over time. The issue was discovered after the chipset went on sale. Rectifying the issue cost Intel approximately US$1 billion, do I think this time Intel will learn from their previous mistakes.
