Bay Trail – the codename for Intel’s new Atom chips, are set to launch for tablet at some point later this year. But it seems Intel will repurpose Bay Trail to use in the company’s Celeron and Pentium chips for entry-level laptops, desktops and all-in-ones (AiO).
Intel had always used the Celeron and Pentium as their entry-level chip for laptops and desktop computers, though this time it seems Intel is confident enough that its new tablet chip will be quick enough for desktop and laptop use.
Bay Trail is based on the Silvermont architecture, which Intel claims will be up to three times faster and five times more power efficient than older Atom cores. Intel also using the Silvermont architecture in its upcoming smartphone chips codenamed Merrifield, which are due to ship early next year.
It’s not yet clear if this upcoming Celeron and Pentium chip will use Silvermont technology. It’s still possible we still can see some of them based on Haswell (or Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge) architecture used in higher-performance chips.
Intel is expected to share more details about Bay Trail chips at the Computex trade show in Taipei next week. How far can the Bay Trail chip run? Only after the Computex trade show, we’ll know.
