It has been the holy grail of science and humanity – to be able to pick up, move and suspend an object without any physical contact a la Star Wars’ Force. This has been done with magnets and superconductor but recently, Laboratory of Thermodynamics in Emerging Technologies in Switzerland has found a way to levitate small objects using sound waves.

One thing that puts this technology above magnetic levitation is that the target materials does not need to be magnetic. Only that the object’s diameter must half of the wavelength of the sound wave.
