One of the new features that OPPO mentioned during the OPPO Reno11 Series launch is LinkBoost. This feature is pretty difficult to show how much it’ll positively impact our day-to-day life with our devices, so it wasn’t shown on stage. That’s why we’re doing this test ourselves today.

This post is brought to you by OPPO Malaysia.

What is LinkBoost?

Built into every Reno11 Series smartphone, LinkBoost is essentially a signal booster – at least in its simplest terms. It helps in terms of signal reception, signal recovery, and we can also get proper signal if we just hold the phone in whatever way we want. The last point is important – remember the iPhone 4’s antennagate?

OPPO claims all these things about the LinkBoost – but does it actually yield any differences?

Our test setup

We have the OPPO Reno11 5G and also the HONOR 90 with us and we’re going to do two tests – one in the elevator, which is a Faraday’s cage, and the second test is in the car parking basement where no there’s usually no internet at all and my Spotify doesn’t work.

We’ll be using a Yoodo SIM card and also Opensignal’s video test as I think it can yield better results compared to just looking at speed test number and ping.

Test 1 – elevator

So I chose an elevator and started messing with it. Luckily, it was nearly 11pm and there was no one using that elevator – else I would’ve looked like some sort of creep.

Anyway, we’re going from the ground floor to the basement parking that’s 2 storeys below. Usually, there’s no signal at all at such areas.

For this test in particular, we can see that the HONOR 90 didn’t even complete the test as it’s just stuck there. The signal bar on both phones are low in the parking basement.

Both phone did struggle, but the OPPO Reno11 5G managed to recover and played the entire video.

Test 2 – car parking basement

This is the ultimate test. Whenever I go into the car in the parking basement, nothing works. I can’t get my Spotify or my GPS working, so I had to drive somewhere near the exit to at least get an idea of which direction I should turn when I got out of the parking.

Susprisingly, the signal bar on both these phones already told me what to expect. The OPPO Reno11, despite being in such a challenging location, managed to get some signal.

So, I tried this test on both the phones – and surprisingly, both of them can load but the OPPO Reno11 5G worked consistently better than the HONOR 90. I did this test for at least 3 times, by the way.

Does LinkBoost actually help?

Short answer – yes, it does. Even though our test case scenarios are subjected to many external factors – one thing that’s clear to me is that the OPPO Reno11 5G is consistently better than the other.

Personally, I’d prefer a more scientific way to testing out this feature, like with an anechoic chamber or just something simple like a metal box that I can open and test the signal recovery time – but that’s a topic for another day.
