MediaTek has unveiled two new smartphone chipsets – the Dimensity 9500s and Dimensity 8500 for some extra alternatives when it comes to smartphones in 2026.
The Dimensity 9500s sits just below the true flagship tier, as the community discovered that it is practically a “9400” that runs 100MHz faster (3.73GHz vs 3.63GHz), but the trade-off is losing about 10% of LPDDR5X memory bandwidth, which could be interesting in terms of real-world performance.
The GPU and NPU units are still the same; users will still get the same performance out of games (presumably) and on-device AI processing prowess and efficiency.
On the other side, the Dimensity 8500 seems to be getting more in general to serve as an actual “upgrade” when up against the 8400.
To start, one of the cores runs faster at 3.4GHz versus 3.25GHz on 8400, albeit the 8x Cortex-A725 cores are the same, while the Mali-G720 GPU has one extra core compared to the MC7 of 8400.
Meanwhile, memory is also faster at LPDDR5X-9600, with the rest of the suite, like the NPU, UFS 4.0, and Wi-Fi chipset, being identical.
All in all, the Dimensity 9500s could be competitive, assuming the end products, which are the smartphones, are priced correctly, while the Dimensity 8500 will be the sweet option for brands to look into for their mid-high offerings.
