Singapore Changi International Airport is one of the largest and busiest transportation hubs in the world. It is also being awarded for 6 consecutive years as the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax. Just recently, Changi Airport Group has announced its cooperation with Certis Group, Xjera & Ademco for the pilot roll-out of the Multi-Signal Surveillance System.
Multi-Signal Surveillance (MSS)
The pilot run is scheduled to take place in 2019 Q2. MSS is developed based on artificial intelligence assisted video analytics. Through the training of the complex neural network that recognises different traits and attributes of human behaviour, MSS is capable of differentiating abnormal activities without the need for manual monitoring of the surveillance footage.
That’s right, apart from being able to recognise a human’s face, Xjera’s proprietary deep learning neural network, Athena, is equipped with the ability to identify individuals from the crowd, persons of interest, traffic flows, and more. Besides, the system also takes in audio data feed which combines with video surveillance analysis to accurately identify what’s happening in a scene. For instance, an actual explosion with panicking travellers or just a false alarm.
With that being said, the pilot implementation of such a sophisticated system does not mean the complete elimination of human intervention. In fact, it is to further automate the surveillance operation that, in turn, reduces potential human error and at the same time predicting & preventing criminal activities before it happens.
To make sure all of the mathematics and calculations are done quickly, the Xjera Labs is working together with NVIDIA and IMBA Singapore to use GPUs for the AI-based image and video analysis. Since the year 2017, Xjera LAbs have been using NVIDIA Tesla P4 GPUs for their R&D of this particular system.
While there are concerns of Singapore’s “Big Brother”, we have to think a little altruistically as this system can mitigate or even prevent terrorist activities.
