Nanotechnology is not something that we have not seen before. In its three most common applications, nanotechnology is actually widely used on our phone processors to get the more transistors in a fixed area. In other words, it’s shrinking the transistors. We’re all familiar with the words such as 22nm, 32nm and 45nm, and that is actually the size of transistors used in reference of a scale of a billionth of a meter!

At present however, nanotechnology’s contribution is not entirely known. We have graphene, which is essentially just a layer of graphite of your pencil. This is also not something new to us. We’ve seen Samsung’s bendable AMOLED screen which has graphene to hold the crystals together and making it bendable.

Now for a little Chemistry 101. When graphene is not stable in a single-sheet form, it will enclose itself to form a shape that looks like a soccer ball. If you ever strolled about the busy streets of Bukit Bintang at Kuala Lumpur, you’ll stumble upon people kicking a ball around which contracts upon kick. When kicked, that shape is exactly what graphene looks like when it encloses itself.

Of course who could ever forget the Nokia Morph which had its concept video published about 5 years ago and just recently patented. It is a very good example of what nanotech can do; with many possibilities beyond that.

Without a doubt, quantum computers are catching up and is going to be the next big thing. Anything that uses transistors are getting smaller by the minute, pushing more capacity in the same size. We might have a ‘nanophone’ (or bananaphone) in the future. The possibilities are without boundaries and limitations, and even the physical properties have yet to be discovered.

These magical materials also hit the sweet spot in weight, strength, size and durability. They are also unbreakable yet stretchable. It is perfect for phones, tablets, elevators, cars and many other things. Just think of anything you can, and you’ll imagine it being more stretchable and much stronger.

  1. This stuff is a blast! When I was in graduate school preparing to become a futurist, one of my projects was to learn about the future of OLEDs. That led to an investment in Universal Display Systems (PANL), which more than made up for the cost of tuition! (Samsung is a largest licensee of Universal Display’s technologies)

These days, I’ve been focused more on investing in graphene, which I write about on my blog here:
