Wireless communications, particularly satellite communications are still relying on low-bandwidth transmitters. NASA has developed a new technology that will can provide fast data transfer from ground to the sky.
The NASA’s lazer-based communication system prototype is impressive! Known as the Lunar Lasercom Space Terminal (LLST), is a result of a joint venture by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and MIT Lincoln Labs.
The satellite is made up of a 10 cm telescope which is mounted on a two-axis gimbal that will help it aim the laser beam towards the surface. The system weights just about 30 Kilogram. LLST can potentially communicate with a range of 400,000 Kilometers – that’s ten times more than any system we have right now! Transfer rate will be 622Mb/s download and 20Mb/s upload.
The most impressive fact about this system is that it could adjust it’s laser beam with surgical, sub-centimeter accuracy while in orbit.
