NasiLemakTech was privileged enough to join Ninetology at their launch at Hilton Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday which saw the unveiling of 3 brand new smartphone offerings from them – the U9X1, the U9Z1 and the U9Z1+. This was our first encounter with the company, and at the launch, we were surprised at the level of build-quality and polish they have brought to their phones.

Even more surprising was to discover that that Ninetology is the second largest in terms of mobile device marketshare in Malaysia. According to Sean Ng, CEO of Ninetology Marketing Sdn Bhd, Ninetology’s launch of the new U9 series is meant to solidify their position by targeting urbanites.
“In the near future, we plan to deliver various segments of smartphones with premium performance tailor-made for the needs of various customers,” he added.

VERY VERY GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION
The U9 smartphones feature a Mediatek MT6589 1.2GHz Quad Core processor running Android 4.2. The devices feature a 309ppi 1280×720 Super AMOLED HD display which is great for all kinds of content and the X1 and Z1+ really lets you take advantage of that display with microSD support up to an additional 32GB.

While competitors have moved away from plastics (or rumoured to be), the new U9 series features mainly plastic devices – with the exception of U9X1 that’s made of aluminium. While the phone designs do feel strangely familiar – a reminiscence of phones from 2012; Ninetology did elevate those designs with their own artistic touches.

Equipped with either a 12 or 13 megapixel rear camera means the U9 Series will be competent at photo taking. The best part of their camera is the software – which packs features that rival even top brands in the market. Dual Camera, beauty mode, 99 continuous shot, panorama, zero shutter delay, burst shot and more – you name it, they’ve got it. We did notice a slight delay when taking low light photos, but this could be from the engineering build.

The experience of their OS version feels very ‘Google Pure’, but we were quite disappointed that the development sets on display didn’t carry Google Now. On the plus side, their devices could be use reverse tether via usb – which understandably is necessary considering the market they are targeting.
As the day drew to an end, we were impressed at what Ninetology has delivered at their latest launch. Although their phones are missing out on a lot of bells and whistles such as 4G, NFC and gesture options, the U9’s RM 1099 to RM 1299 price tag will definitely give its competitors a run for their money. Until we can pin down some review sets and tear up the OS with some benchmarking applications, we consider the Ninetology U9 Series a pocket-friendly choice that most Malaysians can appreciate.
