As Malaysia kicks off the latest round of technology revolution through the JENDELA initiative, the first phase involves shutting down the old guy 3G network while expanding the support of the current 4G coverage in addition to supporting the adoption and deployment of 5G. But how’re things been going on these days? OpenSignal has the answer to that.

OpenSignal 3G 4G Availability

Comparing the 90 day period starting from August 1 until November 1 for this year and last year, on average, 4G availability has been raised by 2.8% while 3G is going down by 3.6% shows that the local telcos are actually shutting down the 3G network slowly and steadily. And on the other hand, 4G availability has grown past 80% for all regions over the course of the 1 year period with 7 of them having 90% availability. Overall, substantial progress for 4G availability is pretty great as of now but having 90% in all of them would be a best-case scenario and a close goal that is achievable.

OpenSignal 4G Coverage

If we take away some of the more confusing figures and just focus on coverage improvements, we can see that East Malaysia has the highest leap at 15.4% (Sabah) and 12.5% (Sarawak) which is a good sign that telcos are not forgetting the development of the Eastern territories. Moving it down and we get Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu at more than 10% of growth with the rest of the states getting either steady improvements or no growth due to full deployment.

As such, OpenSignal suggests that although Malaysia is following the pace of deploying technology and related equipment, it is only limited towards the more well-developed states and often forgot about the rest which resulted in a connectivity gap between the densely and sparsely populated regions. Therefore, the JENDELA initiative is launched to bridge this gap as the country moves towards the commercialization of 5G to enable all Malaysians to work, learn, stay connected, and get entertained even in the remotest areas.
