We can’t deny that smartphones have revolutionized the way we live, work, and communicate. From making calls and sending texts to managing our schedules, capturing memories, and navigating the world, these pocket-sized devices have become indispensable.
But the same thing is going to happen again with AI. Beginning with the reveal of ChatGPT, humanity has first tasted the power of generative AI and now everyone is craving for more. With all sorts of tools nowadays, we can tackle not only text-based inputs and outputs but also images, audio, and videos.
In the case of smartphone photography and also OPPO, what and how did they bring two powerful technologies together? Let’s find out.
Future Projection of AI Cameras and Smartphone Photography
Thanks to the increasing demand for AI-augmented cameras, the global market is said to reach US$23.1 billion in 2028 and that’s only 4 years to go.
Consumers are starting to get into little basics about AI and machine learning capabilities and at the very least, they would know how those things can bring changes and convenience to their lives.
For example, the ‘AI Eraser’ function found in the Reno11 series of smartphones that allows the removal of unwanted subjects from a photo is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to practical and useful features powered by Gen-AI technology. In the upcoming release of the OPPO Reno12 Series, the smartphone will feature this useful function with enhancements to help users edit and create perfect pictures.
AI This, AI That, What is AI
Before we go deeper, let’s have a simple class about Artificial Intelligence in general. At its core, it involves creating systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.
These tasks range from visual perception and speech recognition to decision-making and language translation. AI models can be broadly categorized into several types, including machine learning (ML), deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision.
But we don’t want to go too deep so as a baseline, all you need to know is that machine learning, deep learning, and NLP are some of the most common these days.
For photography, specific models are trained and tailored for image quality enhancements as well as auto fine-tuning when it recognizes what subject or environment you’re currently in, and much more. It will only get expanded and more powerful as time goes on, and OPPO is committed to delivering just that.
OPPO’s Track Record in Implementing AI
Truth to be told, even though the ‘AI Eraser’ feature was delivered to the Reno11 series back in April they already have been paving roads and the basics to make sure they are heading in the right direction.
Over the past decade, OPPO has filed over 5,000 AI-related patents, with about 70% focused on AI imaging. Since 2020, OPPO has developed its own Large Language Models (LLMs) and has been a leader in large vision models and multimodal technology.
Notably, OPPO is the first smartphone company to deploy a 7-billion-parameter LLM directly on the device, introducing over 100 generative AI capabilities to its phones this year.
Additionally, in February, the official announcement of its latest AI center focused on AI development was revealed globally alongside the 180B parameter AndesGPT Large Language Model (LLM) that is trained in-house to manage each and every OPPO device user’s prompt request with a fluent, natural, and helpful response.
But that doesn’t mean that they are gatekeeping access to AI only to flagship models like the Find series and it is the exact opposite as the presence of it in the Reno series has already proven just that.
Therefore, not only in photography but even in general daily driving scenarios, the ColorOS 14 system and associated AI features are ready to let users know that AI is here to stay and why not enjoy its benefits to the fullest.
Looking Ahead
The rise of life-transforming AI technology will inevitably come yet most people didn’t expect them to take off as soon as 2023 all the while growing at such exponential speed and we are just in the 2nd year of the tech boom.
Therefore, the future of smartphone photography is pretty promising with loads of innovative features waiting to be implemented. I could imagine one that combines simple things like settings tuning to advanced generative content that complements real-life photos to create a picture-perfect, zero-compromise result.
Get Ready for OPPO Reno12 Series
