Earth-monitoring satellites have been in orbit for ages, helping researchers and other agencies to harvest various data from above. Each satellite have their own function such as for weather, geographical survey and countless others.
Leading the group from University of Toulouse in France, Raphael Garcia, developed a way to detect infra sound waves resulting from an earth quake. It could measure seismic events on the planet remotely from above which gives us the coverage of the entire planet.
The group discovered that the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation (GOCE) satellite is actually capable of doing just that. The satellite was launched back in 2009 by the European Space Agency and could potentially be the first orbital seismometer.
The satellite’s original function is to measure the gravity field on our planet’s surface. Garcia and his team believe that this satellite could serve as a proof of concept for future earthquake detection satellites.
