It’s been about seven years since the first launch of the PS3 and recently, Sony was the first to announce their next generation console; the PlayStation 4.
Unfortunately, the design of the console was not revealed(yet). Sony seem to be focusing more on social interaction on this new console.
New Redesigned Controller(Finally!)
This is a picture of the new controller which is one of the highlights on the recent launch. PlayStation controller doesn’t seem to change much since PS1 but Sony decided to add more “cosmetically obvious” feature this time.
Sony has added a share button in the middle and throw in a touchpad as well. It will also have a headphone jack! I wonder why nobody have thought of this before. The most important feature however, is the movement tracking mechanism. There will be a sensor bar which is quite similar to Wii. By having this, you will never need another input device such as a tracking ball which was used on the PS3. This controller is everything you’ll need for gaming!
The Guts! (Specs)
Enough talking about the controller, let’s talk about the SPECS!
This baby is going to have an eight-core x64 “Jaguar” CPU manufactured by AMD, Radeon Graphics Processor, large 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, Blu-ray Drive and a hard drive. It will also have a secondary chip which will handle background processing such as downloading while playing games. Along with USB 3.0 port for fast data transfer and a 802.11 b/g/n Wifi capability with Bluetooth 2.1. For those hard wire lovers, an Ethernet port will still be provided. A dedicated video-processing chip will also be onboard.
Social Features
The PS4 will provide you with the ability to connect with friends from social networks. You can also these social features by pressing the share button on the controller. One of the most interesting feature is the ability to take screenshots while playing games. You can directly upload these screenshots to your favorite social network such as Facebook or Twitter. The video-processing chip will allow you to stream your gaming session directly without interruption. Movie streaming will still be provided as the original PS3 such as Netflix.
Remote Play
If you already own a PS Vita, you could just beam your gaming on to the mobile device and continue where you left off on the other screen. Sony’s goal is to get every PS4 title playable on the PS Vita!
Suspend/Hibernation
Sony keeps adding more and more obvious features that other console makers should provide long before. One of the most exciting feature on this PS4 is the Suspend/Resume technology which most of you might know as the Hibernation mode. You are fighting a boss halfway for 1 hour straight but then your mom told you to get off the console. This will no longer be a problem my fellow gamers. You can just push the suspend button and the console will shut down, preserving the exact state. Next time when you are free to resume your hardcore gaming, just press the resume button and it’s just like you’ve never left.
Pricing and Release
Unfortunately, there is no word on the price yet. Heh, we don’t even know how will the console look; don’t ask for the release date.
This next generation console is extremely exciting as they are now focusing on social interactions. More will be revealed on E3 in June.
