If you are looking to get yourself more storage for your beloved PC or laptop, please do yourself a favor and buy your HDD from legitimate sellers such as official retailers or a trusted local dealer because chances are you might waste your money and time if you try to be a cheapskate during these trying times.
According to Back2Gaming, a surge of cheap HDDs is being enlisted on e-commerce websites such as Lazada and Shopee and you can easily find them by using the sorting function “From Low to High Price”. They are being labeled with impossibly low prices that could match the 2nd hand market alongside fitting descriptions and capacities that match official retail stores.
According to Back2Gaming, these hard drives that are mostly WD or Seagate and possibly some other less known brands are being repacked in anti-static bags to make them look like new units. And yes, hard disks do ship in just an anti-static bag and sold in stores as is.
One thing to note is that all of these problematic hard disks are by sellers from overseas. The reviews stated that there are bad sectors or being undetectable via software. Obviously, they’re also filing a refund. Some of them… got something entirely different instead.
Since this whole debacle is happening on Lazada Philippines and Shopee Philippines, we checked if this is happening on the Malaysian counterpart – and yes, it happens to Lazada Malaysia and Shopee Malaysia as well.
Back2Gaming also said that these stocks could be from cloud storage operators that cleared out old drives due to upgrading but scammers took the opportunity and tried to scam uninformed customers and make a quick buck. They could also be just discarded drives due to high error rates or low at health.
Therefore, please always buy through official channels to avoid getting into these troubles as they are not worth your time, money and mental health to be bothered with. That is why e-commerce platforms have dedicated official channels as LazMall and Shopee Mall that are there to save you the hassle. You may get a double-layered warranty from both the platform and the seller as well.
Also, as a general rule of thumb, if it’s too good to be true – it probably is.
