Qualcomm Technologies has officially revealed the brand new smart drone platform in the name of Flight RB5.

Qualcomm Flight RB5 Drone

The Flight RB5 is the latest aviation-based solution by Qualcomm just after the success of the Ingenuity Helicopter that landed on Mars a few months ago where this smart drone is configured and ready for industrial deployment. Powered by the Qualcomm QRB1565 processor, the Flight RB5 was built to fulfill the needs of the digital era such as IoT and 5G – the main drive and cause of Industry 4.0 by enabling innovative possibilities through drone solutions.

As for its components, the SoC developed in-house operates at an ultra-low level but the AI and Machine Learning algorithm are capable of function at a very low power draw to perform all sorts of autonomous functions. For connectivity, it supports both 5G and WiFi 6 with security defense handled by Qualcomm SPU to safely secure the drone against all sorts of attacks that tries to take control of it. It is especially crucial and riskier when, for say, hundreds of Flight RB5 deployed to places that are out of human reach during critical missions.

Practically, the world has already deployed drones in many industries such as emergency response (forest fire), entertainment (remember the drones that shaped the globe during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics Show?), logistics (parcel delivery), mapping, and tracking (heat detection). However, those can be quite restrictive and proprietary in terms of accessibility and Qualcomm wants the world to realize how much more drones can do by simply taking a step into commercialization (quite a big step I must say) and let every business sector taking part in it.

The Qualcomm Flight RB5 reference design is currently available for presale through ModalAI and is expected to be made available during Q4 2021. Perhaps starting 2022, we’ll see a bunch of these flying around our sky?
