Yet another mid-range smartphone processor has been announced, and it is by Qualcomm, launching the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC, aimed to be a solid step up from the “Gen 3” of last year.
For this new version, Qualcomm has given it a 1+4+3 core layout now, with a prime core running at 2.8GHz, four performance cores at 2.4GHz, and three efficiency cores at 1.8GHz – all resulting in a general 27% leap in performance compared to the Gen 3 version.
The Adreno GPU also got a speed bump at 30% more, and they have received some love via downstreaming the Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, such as Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 for more efficient processing in your favourite titles.
As for the Hexagon NPU, it is quite ample at 65% boost in AI tasks, allowing it to tackle things like Stable Diffusion 1.5 directly on-device, which is kind of wild for a mid-range chip.
One might be able to take advantage of the support for all major HDR formats of HDR10, HDR10+, HDR Vivid, and HLG for some extra visual enhancement.
On the connectivity front, you’re looking at sub-6 GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and support for aptX Lossless and Adaptive audio codecs. They’ve also included something called XPAN, which is the brand’s take on an expanded personal area network.
As for who’s using it, phones from Honor, vivo, and realme powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 are expected to start showing up soon.
