There are quite a lot of shakeups in Razer over the course of the last few days. When the Razer Game Store was announced that it will be closed, announced there was another workforce realignment that happened over at at Razer which affected the mobile division too.
That in itself, put the future of a possible Razer Phone 3 in jeopardy. DroidLife received a tip that suggests Razer has “laid off the majority of its mobile device and hardware engineer staff” and also some in marketing. Said tipster also suggested that the remaining staff is there to provide software updates for the existing Razer Phone 2, but there will not be a Razer Phone 3.
DroidLife also reached out to Razer to comment on the workforce cut in the mobile division; to which Razer replied by saying:
Razer has made changes to realign our organization and strengthen our path to growth. We will centralize our resources to focus on key projects and improve our profitability. As part of the realignment, we shut down several projects and unfortunately had to part ways with about 30 employees (about 2% of our total workforce). Other employees of the affected projects will be moved to different parts of Razer to work on other key focus projects and initiatives which will continue to scale and hire.
Then, DroidLife also obtained a second statement from Razer which specifically mentioned about the mobile division:
In our mobile division, there were some staff members who were let go, and others who were reassigned to other new projects. We see great opportunities in the mobile gaming space that we created with the Razer Phone and will continue to invest in this category through a combination of hardware and software initiatives. We are working on new exciting mobile projects and will share the news when we are ready. The Razer Phone 2 will continue to be on sale and we are committed to supporting it with the latest updates and features.
The second statement which is specifically addressing Razer’s mobile division has cleared things up – particularly on the fate of Razer Phone 2. We now know that Razer will still support it with software updates.
As for the Razer Phone 3, it sounds like the phone will see the light of day though Razer did not specifically mention it. We might be seeing a mobile gaming app – something like the Razer Game Store but for Android.
We will continue to update this story as we know more information regarding the Razer Phone 3.
