It was an amazing breakthrough when DVDs first came out in the masses, where everyone can now enjoy higher resolution (at least compared to VCDs) anytime, anywhere. Everyone started collecting their DVD remastered Star Wars trilogy and its prequel again and watched it right on their new gaming console, the PlayStation 2.Researchers-Give-DVDs-1-000-TB-Capacity-2

Then came around with the dual-layer DVDs which the XBOX 360 uses, and then Blu-Ray came with the PlayStation 3. Now, it seems like DVDs went beyond what Blu-Ray discs hold. 1000TB. Yes, a thousand terabytes.

The DVDs work by having pits and holes created by beams of light that creates bits, or logic high and logic low, thus the name “burn”. The capacities increases as the beams of light gets smaller and smaller, making the disc able to store more on the same surface area. What magic the researchers did here was to create two beams of light that partially cancel each other out to create an even smaller beam of light, thus drastically increasing the bit density.

The new technology is still in an early phase, so we’ll all have to wait for at least a few years for this to be fully ready for the prime time. DVD’s comeback might be possible after all.
