We’ve reviewed a few of these keyboards before – and they’re all from Armaggeddon’s Kalashnikov family of keyboards too. They’re the Kalashnikov AK-555 and the Kalashnikov AK-550i, which we both reviewed. They’re actually pretty good membrane keyboards, to be honest. Now, they’ve came up with a brand new spill-proof keyboard – the Kalashnikov AK-566i.
In a way, it’s more of a successor to the Kalashnikov AK-555. Its designs are pretty much the same too. However, is that something to be a concerned of? Let’s find out here, as we compare the differences between the Kalashnikov AK-566i and Kalashnikov AK-555. In that case, do read up our review on the Kalashnikov AK-555 before reading this review here. Go on ahead, we’ll wait for you.

Upfront, the packaging is nearly identical – with the same design cues and the exact same keyboard layout too. Flipping the box at its side though, reveals something different.

Yea, Armaggeddon upped the ante on this keyboard with the inclusion of triple-coloured LED lights. I have to say, this is unexpected. Spill-proofing something with components that are constantly switched on is a challenge in terms of the cost. However, Armaggeddon’s “3 colour pulsating LED lights” aren’t exactly “3 colours” per se. More on this later.

Now, we’re gonna keep this review as brief and simple as possible, since both the Kalashnikov AK-566i and Kalashnikov AK-555 are identical in terms of the key switch, comfort, design, and the lack of software. The only difference here is on the “3 colour pulsating LED light”. Again, I strongly urge you to read up our full in-depth review of the Kalashnikov AK-555 to get the full details.
Now, the main difference. I can’t say that the Kalashnikov AK-566i has a “3 colour pulsating LED light” feature built in, but more like blue-and-red LED light, with purple added into the mix. Technically, it does have 3 colours – and it’s shown on the packaging as well. Pay attention to the colour wheel and you’ll realize.
With this design choice, the older Kalashnikov AK-555 is now totally obsolete and irrelevant – at least to me. The Kalashnikov AK-555 comes in two different colours – either blue, or red backlighting. There’s one button to turn the light on and off, and that’s it.
On the Kalashnikov AK-566i however, the exact same button now cycles through blue, red, and purple colours before turning the backlight off. It’s a simple 3-in-1 design.
If you do care about backlighting and for some reason needs spill-proof design keyboards on a budget, get this. I really like the backlight here, and together with the 3-in-1 colour swapping, it’s a real great keyboard – even when I don’t need the spill-proof mechanism.
