This is the new OPPO Find X5 Pro. In the sea of smartphones that we are in, OPPO has some interesting ways to differentiate its new flagship from the others. So, let’s go in-depth and see what’s so different about this phone.
Equipped with the in-house MariSilicon X chip, does the OPPO Find X5 Pro lives up to the hype?
Let’s first take a look at the design of the phone. I don’t think it changed much from the previous Find X3 Pro in terms of the overall shape and size. Even the backpanel is still the same super-glossy and slippery material too.
However, there are three things that we need to highlight – number 1 is the name “MariSilicon X” on the camera bump, and there is also one more name beside the OPPO logo – Hasselblad.
So, let’s talk about the cameras then. We have a total of 3 different cameras at the back here and all of them are usable to take pics. It’s a little bittersweet since OPPO removed the microscope camera in favor of 2x standard telephoto camera.
OPPO put in a lot of effort to enhance the camera capabilities of the Find X5 Pro and even developed their own chip to enhance the camera’s photography and videography performance.
The MariSilicon X isn’t just an NPU – it’s a combination of an ISP and NPU together, plus another memory subsystem for high-speed read/write activity to speed up the processing speed even more.
To have a look at all the pictures and videos taken with the OPPO Find X5 Pro, watch our video at the top of this review.
And to view all of the pictures you’ve taken, the OPPO Find X5 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate and has a resolution of 3216×1440 pixels.
Of course, these specs mean nothing – so let’s take out our colorimeter and test – and to my surprise, at 100 nits of brightness, the phone can go up to 99.59% of sRGB and 98.52% of DCI-P3 color gamuts!
And for those who are concerned about broad daylight outdoor usage – the maximum brightness is at around 486 nits of brightness for our unit – which is sufficient to be used under broad daylight but maybe not on a supremely sunny day.
As for the performance of the OPPO Find X5 Pro, I think this is rather standard. It’s a flagship phone, so it comes with the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and it manages to perform really well in games like Genshin Impact, managing to achieve around 40 to 45fps at the highest graphical settings and also maintaining a very low surface temperature. The hottest spot is always at the screen, right beside the camera bump – and the hottest is at 42°C.
Have a look at our gaming test video to know more about how the OPPO Find X5 Pro performs.
For the battery life – this is rather straightforward. At 100 nits of brightness, it lasted about 10 hour and 50 minutes in the PC Mark battery life test – which is not the best but we all know how inefficient the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is.
For the charger, OPPO has an 80W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge charger in the box for the Find X5 Pro and it charges from 12% to 100% in about 35 minutes. Pretty quick, honestly.
Software – ColorOS 12.1 with Android 12
Now, let’s take a look at the software then. The OPPO Find X5 Pro, being the company’s latest flagship smartphone, is running the latest version of Android 12 with ColorOS 12.1. I’m still liking ColorOS 12 so far since the settings menu and overall user experience is good, it’s just that there are a lot of bloatware and also apps that cannot be uninstalled like the Hot Games, Hot Apps, and the App Market.
Moreover, there are a lot of ads from these bloatware too. Plus, this “quick device connect” asked me for permission to scan nearby devices and I cannot dismiss it. I can turn off the notifications for the “Quick Device Connect”, though.
I’d still say the user experience is quite okay overall. OPPO also committed to 3 Android Updates and 4 Years of Security Updates for the Find X series of smartphones – so I presume that includes the Find X5 Pro too.
Misc. things to mention
A few more things to mention before we end the review – the OPPO Find X5 Pro also has:
- Proper USB 3.0 for fast transfer speeds
- HDMI output over USB-C
And so – we’ve arrived at the end of this review. At the price RM4,999, it’s surely a hefty price – but I think the OPPO Find X5 Pro meets my expectations and showed us that they are competent in making a proper flagship smartphone.
I’m surely going to take OPPO flagship smartphones seriously now since they’ve proven themselves to be competent.
