It’s been a very busy past few weeks as many brands are releasing a new generation of flagship smartphones that are equipped with the latest chipsets that were just announced in October. Yeah, the time gap is really short compared to what we had previously.

Now, the OPPO Find X8 Pro is unique because OPPO region-locked the Find X6 and X7, and only returning to the global market this time. I have high hopes for this phone too since there is quite a lot of hype for it.

Design

Okay, let’s get started with the design. The new OPPO Find X8 Pro comes in two colors – Space Black and also Pearl White which is what we have. This Pearl White is very unique as every unit of the Find X8 Pro with this color, will have a different reflection pattern on it. It’s randomized.

I really like how it feels in my hands too. It’s covered by a matte finish and the frame of the phone is also in a matte finish. The entire back curves into the frame, and then curves to the screen – and it just feels so nice to touch and hold.

Screen

Now, let’s talk about the screen first. The OPPO Find X8 Pro comes with a 6.78-inch OLED screen with a higher-than-usual 2780×1264 pixels in resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate. It also curves into the frame at all sides – making it look very premium. It also has a screen protector applied from the factory – but finding replacement screen protectors that cover the entire glass with the curve might be challenging.

Either way, the screen’s maximum brightness is up to only 1150 nits in SDR mode and shoots up to around 1550 nits in HDR mode. Three different color modes are available, so let’s go through them individually.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

Its default out-of-the-box color profile can achieve 98.37% of sRGB and 73.04% of DCI-P3 color gamuts. Pretty standard as the colors aren’t extremely vivid. We can then turn on the Pro color profile that improves the both color gamut coverage a bit, but nothing drastic.

Then, we have one more color profile called vivid. This one is going to push the color gamut coverage even further, and it can cover 100% of sRGB and 99% of DCI-P3. The ΔE definitely did increase as well, but still way below 2.0.

Overall, the screen is done nicely here – just that the brightness is a bit low in comparison to other displays.

One thing that I have to complain about is the fingerprint scanner’s location. Why is it so low? This is just not ergonomic at all.

Performance

But of course, we have to talk about the performance. The OPPO Find X8 Pro is using the latest MediaTek Dimensity 9400 and OPPO did a lot of tuning to ensure the chip runs cool but still provides enough performance while gaming.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

I did the 3DMark Extreme Wild Life stress test and found out that hey – this phone has a very conservative thermal limit of only 41°C. That’s very low considering that phones from the 8 Gen 3 era were thermal throttling hard at 47°C.

So I did a gaming test for this video – and thanks to everyone for watching that video, link is in the description below, we showed that the frame rate is nearly 60fps all the time in Genshin Impact 5.1, and the thermal limit is still only at 41°C.

I mean if we’re getting such performance and yet the chip is only at 41°C, it’s actually amazing. We can definitely feel some warmth when we hold the phone in our hands but it’s very mild.

Other games also performed great, like Zenless Zone Zero, which ran at the highest graphical settings and managed around 50fps and above in the intensive boss fight. Once again, the temperature is only at 41°C.

Some games like COD Warzone ran very stably at 60fps as well, so I have no complaints at all. One thing to note is that COD Warzone is a very weird game as once you enter spectator mode, the frame rate drops to 30fps, so that’s why this part of the gaming test for COD Warzone is at 30fps.

Honestly speaking though, I do think that OPPO is throttling the performance hard by setting the thermal limit to 41°C. A lot of performance of the Dimensity 9400 is going to waste – but then again in our gaming test, we’ve shown that the experience is actually very good. It’s stable and there are no significant frame drops due to thermal throttling. I think this is a good balance and it reminds me of the good old days of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Battery life

Now is also the time we should talk about the battery life. You see, the Dimensity 9400 is using the same concept as the Dimensity 9300. There are no efficiency cores. And this time around, the Dimensity 9400 is using a single Cortex-X925 – which is the latest prime performance core, 3x Cortex-X4 cores which are the prime cores from the last generation, and 4x Cortex-A720. I’m not sure why MediaTek went for the Cortex-A720 when the Cortex-A725 was announced alongside the Cortex-X925.

Either way, we locked the screen resolution and the refresh rate at its highest then locked it at 100 nits brightness and did the PCMark battery life test. This phone, with its 5,910mAh or 22.88Wh battery, lasts for 18 hours. It’s actually very good and can last throughout a full day of usage.

Charging speed

The charging speed is where things get interesting. We’re getting this OPPO 80W SuperVOOC charger in the box, except for the EU which is actually a good thing and we’ll talk about it later. Now, using the included charger in the box, we can charge from 15% to completion in about 52-ish minutes. Pretty standard and it can go faster because it doesn’t actually take in 80W in its default mode.

To make it go even faster, we’ll have to head into the settings menu and enable the Smart Rapid Charging option. Then, we can make it charge even faster at the expense of battery temperature. It’ll still take about the same time to actually charge to completion, but it reaches the 80% mark faster.

Even if you do turn on the Smart Rapid Charging option though, the maximum temperature before it starts throttling the charging speed is at 37.5°C. Again, very conservative as I’ve seen other phones going up to around 42.5°C when the fastest charging speed is enabled.

However, if you want to use the OPPO 80W SuperVOOC fast charging, you’ll need to use their own charger and cable.

Back to the EU part. This is going to be funky. Essentially, there’s a special version of the Find X8 Pro for EU folks and it supports up to 55W of USB-PD PPS, also known as 11V/5A. For us here in Malaysia who are the non-EU folks, we’re only getting 33V of USB-PD PPS, also known as 11V/3A.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

I’m not sure why OPPO didn’t just make all the Find X8 Pro support up to 55W of USB-PD PPS. Either way, for our unit here, it only takes in 25W at most but it only takes around 62-ish minutes to charge from 15% to completion – only a tad bit slower than the default charging speed. That’s actually amazing!

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

EU folks should be getting slightly faster charging speeds, though I don’t think it’ll be that much faster.

Either way, I gotta thank the EU for mandating a common charger for all devices and also having the option to purchase a new device with or without a charger. This forces companies like OPPO to adopt the USB-PD PPS charging standard!

So now, it doesn’t matter if you don’t want to pay OPPO for their SuperVOOC charger and cable, you can use USB-PD PPS chargers and power banks from Ugreen or any other companies. It’s a win for us consumers.

Software

As for the software, we’re running it on ColorOS 15 on top of Android 15. This version of ColorOS has very smooth animations even though I do think that they’re a bit slow.

There are also many parts that just look like its competitor… especially the Aqua Dynamics. I mean, even though they look similar, OPPO has its own set of specialties as well. I just can’t shake off that feeling of similarity.

The overall functionality is pretty similar to what we have before and injected with more AI features. There’s the photo remaster, productivity tools like AI writing, AI summary that literally summarizes an entire webpage, AI speak that reads an entire document to us, all of that stuff. We can turn off the screen and have it continue reading, by the way.

They’re certainly useful since I constantly use the AI summary to skip all of the ads on a website.

There is also an alert slider at the left side as well – and I really love this feature even though I leave my phone on silent forever.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

And specifically for the OPPO Find X8 Pro, we have 5 generations of Android OS upgrades and 6 years of security patches.

Camera

Now, let’s talk about the cameras. For the Find X8 Pro, we have a total of four cameras this time around. Two of them are using periscope zoom lenses and the 73mm lens has a fancy W-shaped light path to reach the sensor. Not sure why they opted for this but the aperture is still at a large f/2.6.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

I’m just not a fan of this camera bump design. Seriously, why is everyone going for this unoriginal design with the massive glass circle covering all the lenses?

To have a look at all of the pictures and videos taken with the OPPO Find X8 Pro, watch our video at the top of this review.

We also need to talk about the Quick Button. This is a pressure-sensitive button that also has a capacitive strip at the top. We can double-press on it to bring up the camera app, then swipe to adjust the zoom. By default, I find it a bit too “stiff” but we can head into the camera settings menu and change the pressure sensitivity down.

A few more things to mention

We now have a few more things to mention. The OPPO Find X8 Pro comes with a USB 3.0 port at the bottom – so copying files in and out of the phone is super fast. This port also supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, so we can use it with an external monitor.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

It does also have a dual SIM card support but no microSD or audio jack or anything like that. It does, however, have an IR blaster at the top.

Should you buy the OPPO Find X8 Pro?

So, should you buy the OPPO Find X8 Pro? Actually, yes. It’s a good all-rounder package with great specs with great performance even though its thermal limit is only at 41°C.

The cameras are also good even though it can look a bit dull at times since it’s closer to reality.

The phone also looks and feels great to hold, but I’m really not a fan of the camera bump.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review

At the price of RM4,999 – it is definitely creeping up to the ultra flagships of the world. While OPPO’s ColorOS introduces a lot of features and a new animation engine, it still has bloatwares like Fineasy that automatically launches when we double press the power button and cannot be changed, and the App Market that doesn’t offer anything special. There are also ads pushed to us via notifications, but I have disabled it manually.

OPPO Find X8 Pro review
This is rubbish and we cannot reprogram the double-tap power button gesture to do something else other than to launch this Fineasy.

So it’s up to you to decide if this is a good phone or not. We’ve shown you our findings and the price. If you like it, go buy one.
