Okay, as promised – this is the dedicated video about the PICO Motion Tracker. I personally think that this piece of accessory is far more interesting than the PICO 4 Ultra headset itself – which we have reviewed.
So, the motion tracker. The box is fairly simple. Just open it up and you get the ankle straps and two pucks. The pucks have a button and also a USB-C port. We’ll have to charge them via this USB-C port. To use these motion trackers, we’ll have to plug them into the ankle straps and clip it in, then press the button at the top.
How to know which direction is the top? The button and the LED is located at the top. The pucks must also face forward – so just turn them around. The orientation is important, by the way.
Once we have worn the ankle straps, we can then wear our VR headset. Surprisingly, the motion tracker works with the PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4 Pro, PICO 4, and also the PICO Neo3.
We’ll then have to head into the Motion Tracker app and start the pairing process. Just hold the button on each of the motion trackers for 6 seconds, and it’ll appear in the app.
Of course, we’ll have to calibrate them as well. Remember – you must know your height and key it into the app so that the calibrator knows what to do. The steps to actually calibrate it is supremely simple. We’ll have to look forward at first, then once that’s done, we’ll have to look down towards the ankle straps. Remember – the pucks must be pointing forward as well, with the LED and button facing upwards.
And voila, that’s done. Seriously, that’s it. That’s all the steps to make the motion trackers work. We have 24 skeleton points with one VR headset, two controllers, and two ankle straps.
Then, we can start gaming with it. I tried the All In One Sports VR as they now have games in either the conventional controller mode or in motion tracker mode. I played this Kung Fu game and I absolutely love this game. It’s simple but very difficult to master. I had a lot of fun with this game. It’s a DLC, by the way.
I also played Foot Hockey – which is essentially what we play in the arcades but we use our foot as the stopper thing. Very fun game indeed.
Of course, we have to try VR Chat. We can download the game officially from the PICO app store and it supports full-body motion tracking too. I moved my body around and the avatar moved exactly like how I did. I even sat down on the floor and crossed my leg – my avatar did the same too. Well, sort of.
There are many, many more games that take advantage of this full-body motion tracker but I don’t have the time to test out all of them. For all of the games that I randomly tested, it works really well. It’s not the most accurate full-body motion tracking, but it’s very good given that we only have two extra ankle straps compared to the usual VR setup. Remember, we don’t have any satellites in the room either.
If you want to use these motion trackers in a PC game, you can! It’s very seamless as well. Just pair the PICO Motion Trackers to your PICO VR headset, then connect to your PC via the PICO Connect software – and somehow – SteamVR will register all the motion trackers alongside the skeleton points. It’s amazing!
I don’t have to worry about the battery life either as it can last easily for about 20 hours of combined usage with one single charge. We can also see the battery level in the VR headset’s quick settings menu too.
If you’re a developer and want to take advantage of this quick and easy motion tracker in your application, PICO actually has an SDK for you.
Should you buy the PICO Motion Tracker?
All in all, I think that the PICO Motion Tracker is just surprisingly simple. It’s simple to set up and simple to use, yet good enough for most purposes. And I think this motion tracker adds a lot of value to what we can already do with the PICO VR headset.
At RM399, we can get full-body motion tracking. I honestly can’t think of a better deal than this.
