I can’t wait for the firmware update any longer, so we’ll just proceed with this review. For this year in particular, I think the Galaxy S24+ got the most upgrades out of the entire S24 family. It has a new screen, a slightly tweaked design, and for those living outside of North America and China, we’re getting the new Exynos 2400. Many people will immediately say Exynos is trash – but as we’ve shown – the new Exynos 2400 is a very competent chipset.

Performance

So, let’s address the elephant in the room first – the performance. Specifically, that Exynos 2400 chipset. Throughout my tests – and also some other tests from other people that I’ve seen – the Exynos 2400 is indeed a very powerful chipset. We’re getting good frame rates on Genshin Impact, and the thermal limit is at 46°C.

Now, there are a lot of people – even in our own comments section – who instantly say that this is a crappy phone because of the Exynos 2400 chipset and dismissed this phone. I mean, I get it if you’re traumatized by the previous generations like the Exynos 990 but it’s been many years. Time flows, and things change.

But, not everything is rainbow and sunshine with this Exynos 2400. Because it’s such a new chip at the time of our testing, the GPU found inside the Exynos 2400 which is called the Xclipse 940, still has some incompatibility issues with certain games. For example, Fortnite and its lighting issues. I’m sure this will get fixed, but I’m not sure when it will be fixed.

Lighting issue…

Oh – we also did a bonus video where we tested the emulation performance of the Galaxy S24+ with the Exynos 2400 chipset. It’s not going to perform the best here since there is literally zero support for this particular chip yet.

Battery life

Okay, the second thing that many of you have requested is the battery life. I’ll have to explain a bit more things in this section. So the Galaxy S24+ comes with a 4,900mAh battery, which is slightly larger than last year’s S23+.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus review

Using our standardized battery life test, this phone can reach 13 hours and 22 minutes on 1440p resolution at 120Hz. That’s actually pretty good, but has worse battery life compared to the Galaxy S23+ from last year. Even when we switch over to 1080p resolution and redid the test, the S24+ still doesn’t last as long as the S23+.

Now, all of this talk and messy data is difficult to digest, so let’s recompile everything into this table. This shows that the S24+ is definitely eating up a bit more battery power compared to the previous generation.

I still don’t think comparing the S23+ and the S24+ is the right thing to do since it could be that the S24+ needs to power up more pixels, hence it consumes more battery. When we compare the battery life of the smaller S24 and S23, then we know for sure that the Exynos 2400 is more efficient than before.

As a quick mention, anything above 12 hours in this battery life test can comfortably last us through a full day of usage if we don’t play heavy games on it.

Charging speed

As for the charging speed, it’s the same as before, so the S24+ can take in a total of 45W. It’ll take around an hour to complete the charging cycle and there’s really no surprise there. I’m still glad that Samsung is using USB-PD PPS standard as it is the same charger as many modern laptops.

Also, this phone does support the battery bypass feature too – it’s already here by default in One UI 6.

Software

Speaking of the software, this is the one thing that I won’t focus on much since the One UI 6.1 found in this phone is pretty much just One UI 6.0 but with some extra Galaxy AI features inside. We’ll have another video testing some AI features – so subscribe for that.

The features that I like are still here – like Edge Panel and Samsung Pay. Some may call it bloatware but I think it should only be called bloatware if no one uses those features. Modes and Routines is still more powerful than Apple’s Shortcuts, by the way. There’s just no competition.

One more thing I want to highlight is the upgrade to 7 generations of Android OS upgrades and 7 years of security patches. This is a great win for consumers.

Screen

Then, the screen. I think this is the one part that got the most upgrades. Firstly, the size has been increased slightly to 6.7-inch with an upgraded resolution of 3120×1440 pixels – which is the same as the Ultra. The bezels are now smaller and symmetrical across all sides and it just looks a lot more sexier compared to the previous generation.

As pointed out by some of our commenters who already got their hands on the new S24 series, they said that the screen’s colors are not as vivid as before. And you’re right. The new screen covers 100% of sRGB color gamut but only 87.04% of DCI-P3. However, the ΔE number is very low this time. Perhaps Samsung still needs some time to make some changes to the screen via a software update – I’m not sure.

Anyway, the maximum brightness is at around 1375 nits and that’s a nice boost of around 200 nits compared to before.

Design

One thing that many people talked about is the design of this phone. One glance and many people immediately say that it looks like an iPhone. I have to admit – I have never owned an iPhone before so I don’t know what an iPhone looks or feels. My daily driver is the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

And after comparing the S24 and S24+ to an iPhone, I know why everyone immediately says it looks like an iPhone. The rounded edges with a flat frame is just way too similar to the iPhone’s design.

And I have to admit – this is a fantastic design. It’s very comfortable to hold and dare I say – better to hold than the Ultra because it doesn’t have that pointy corner. I gotta tip my imaginary hat off to Apple for creating this design in the first place.

Camera

And now comes the camera. This part is the one that I don’t know how to approach because we are waiting for the firmware update. That firmware update is said to have improved camera performance – but at the time of filming, it’s the 25th of January and I can’t wait any longer.

In terms of the camera hardware, they’re pretty much the same as the last generation. However, changing the chipset also means changing the ISP – image signal processor – so the images coming out of it will look completely different. One thing I have to highlight is that Samsung disabled Scene Optimizer by default so I’m going to test it out by not enabling this too.

To have a look at all the pictures and videos taken with this phone, watch our video at the top of this review.

Few more things to mention

And now, a few more things to mention before we end this review. It comes with a USB 3 port at the bottom of the phone and there’s also display output with Samsung DeX support. Fun fact – if you connect it to a portable monitor with touch support, we can just use the portable monitor.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus review

As usual, the Galaxy S24+ only has a dual nano SIM card slot, no expandable storage, and no audio jack. It still has IP68, in case you’re wondering.

Conclusion

Now is the conclusion and this is where I usually ask the question “should you buy the thing that we’re reviewing” but for this, I want to ask you another question – should you be worried and avoid the Exynos version.

Throughout my tests, I’d say no. Most of the world is getting Exynos 2400 for the S24 and S24+ and I think Samsung did improve a lot. It shows great gaming performance, great emulation performance, and also rather good battery life, all things considered.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus review

And I have a message for everyone. My job here is to show you how well the Exynos 2400 performs and I did that. Somehow that made headlines around the world and I also helped clear many people’s doubts about this new Exynos chip. I didn’t know those test has such a big impact and I appreciate all of your comments and support.

But now, it’s up to Samsung themselves to make sure their own phones with Exynos are treated with respect. They’ve got good hardware, so keep improving.

The price is something that I’m personally worried about since it got a big price hike from last year, but many people don’t care about the price and will trade-in their current device or be able to score some discount somehow.
